Game of Thrones Star Harrowing Ordeal With Brain Surgery

Emilia Clarke Goes Through Two Brain Surgeries

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has recently been speaking about the brain surgeries that she thought would end her acting career and life. The actress suffered from a brain aneurysm in 2011. She was able to return for the second season of Game of Thrones. Then in 2013, she had to have surgery once again for another brain aneurysm. Two life-threatening occasions got the actress down but not out.

Surviving

Emilia Clarke had a lot to deal with not only the brain aneurysm but complications afterward as well. From the BBC recounting her first brain aneurysm in 2011. Doctors diagnosed her with having a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), from which a third of sufferers die immediately or soon after. After the surgery, a condition called aphasia set in, meaning she could not communicate and feared her acting career was over. This all happened after the actress got her first big break as Daenerys Targaryen in what would become the phenomenal hit HBO show Game of Thrones.

She was able to recover in time to film season 2 but in a much-weakened state. Her second surgery for another brain aneurysm came in 2013. She was performing in New York. This was a much more invasive surgery than her previous one. The BBC article notes that her skull had to be opened up. What was supposed to be a “simple” operation to take care of a growth found on her brain turned very serious. After the initial surgery Clarke had a brain bleed and had to be put under again and her skull cut away to fix the bleed.

Not Stopping

You can read Emilia Clarke’s full article about her struggles here from the New Yorker. This is the first time the actress has discussed publicly her multiple brain surgeries. Not only the brain surgeries but the fear and anxiety that come afterward not knowing what is going to happen next. She has set up a charity to help people suffering or recovering from strokes or other brain injuries. You can check out the charity and more info from her Instagram video announcing it here.

Thankfully our Mother of Dragons says she’s back at 100 percent!
