Games of Thrones Confirms That a Fan Favorite Didn’t Make It

This week David Benioff and D.B. Weiss from Game of Thrones confirmed that a beloved and fan favorite pet, Ser Pounce, will not be returning for any future episodes.

Animal lovers may want to consider stopping here before continuing on. Any fan of Game of Thrones is likely aware that even animals are not spared the harsh fates meted out in this world.

Not even pets are safe.

The infamous cat named Ser Pounce was the pet of the youngest Lannister boy, Tommen. He was a lucky cat, all things considered. His first appearance wasn’t until after Joffrey had exited stage left—a fact that surely increased his life expectancy. Ser Pounce was only in one episode of the series, but that short appearance apparently made quite the impact. Fans have been asking after him all this time, hoping that he somehow survived Cersei’s attack in “Oathkeeper.”

Ser Pounce’s Fate

Many fans had been hoping that Ser Pounce had been able to survive where others had not. You can’t really blame them for that hope since we never saw his death on screen. However, Game of Thrones is not known for its mercy. Not even to fan favorites or cute little animals.

In fact, from what we’ve heard of Ser Pounce’s fate, it may have been more merciful had he died in the initial attack. Instead, he did survive that, only to encounter Cersei’s wraith.

To say that the cat’s death was too graphic to include in the series should be telling. Apparently, after losing Tommen to suicide, Cersei opted to take out her anger on the poor little kitty. Behaviors like this prove that Joffrey was more like his mother than not. It may seem cruel that the directors had decided the cat’s fate when it had such a small impact on the series as a whole. Yet it fits in perfectly with the harsh world that these characters have grown up in. At least nobody was forced to see a graphic death of Ser Pounce. That’s one small mercy.
