Gears of War Movie Not Following the Game

The upcoming Gears of War movie has some very interesting news announced. Via Geek Tyrant, the head of the film, Ron Fergusson, notes the film will be set in an alternate reality from the video game’s story. The movie will still be set on the Planet Sera and will features characters from the game; but the story will be very different than what fans know from the popular video game series.

As noted, whenever any video games are turned to film, they do not have the best track records. Most fail to excite the fan base or generate enough interest from people not familiar with the games. It’s a bit tricky to transfer what’s great about an interactive video game to a film you just sit and watch.

It seems Ron Fergusson is on the right track about turning the game into a film.

“In order for the movie to be successful, it has to be a great movie first and a Gears movie second. Basically, the way that we sort of reconciled that was, we said, ‘oh the movie should be an alternate reality. It should not be dependent on the game story, nor should it influence the game story.’”

It seems the idea is to make a good film. That, and also not completely ignoring the video game it is based on. Again, it is a tricky little thing to do, to pay homage to the video game and its fans but also make an independent film that people who have never played the game will enjoy as well.

The script is still being worked on so, the film is not close to being a thing yet. It sounds like the team behind the film are heading in the right direction, but only time will tell.
