Geoff Johns Takes Another Crack at Green Lantern
During Comic-Con 2018, former President and CCO of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns sat down with comicbook.com and discussed a bevy of topics including the upcoming Green Lantern Corps film. The film opens July 24th, 2020.
Green Lantern’s Failed Screen Presence
Green Lantern is a tough nut to crack. The possibilities for the character are seemingly endless. Furthermore, depending on who’s wielding (and the color of) the ring, the story takes another drastic turn. Green Lantern’s deep mythology is ripe with storytelling opportunities, but it’s easy to become overwhelmed.
This problem reared its ugly head in 2011 with the Green Lantern movie. Yes, the film was rushed out in time to compete with the MCU and fill in the gap between Christopher Nolan Batman films. This led to shoddy effects work, a half-baked script, and woeful miscasting. However, the film also crumbled under the weight of Green Lantern’s own rich world. The film relied heavily on fan knowledge of the character and threw in nods to its history with little or no explanation. As a result, the film tanked with critics and audiences. But Green Lantern is one of DC’s most popular heroes, and fans want a great Green Lantern movie.
A Personal Lantern’s Journey
Enter Geoff Johns. Johns took over as President and CCO of DC Entertainment in February of 2010. Following the failure of Green Lantern and the closure of The Dark Knight trilogy, the comic book writer rebooted DC’s film properties and gave us the Worlds of DC (formerly called the DCEU.) Granted, critical and audience reaction to the Worlds of DC is mixed. But it does unite DC’s films under one common banner. With that in mind, Johns is bringing Green Lantern into the fold of the shared universe. He’s also writing the script. During an interview with comicbook.com, the man who made Aquaman cool opened up about his Green Lantern Corps script. Johns told the website the following:
“I want to make sure I write the best script I can possibly write, so I need to go away in a cave and write that script and finish it and then come out and go ‘okay’ and work with the guys and really make sure we’ve got the best story to tell and the best way into this character. I think we have a lot of things in it that…people know my run from Green Lantern and so they shouldn’t be too surprised by seeing what we bring into it.”
Okay, it’s not much, but there is one important detail in the quote, he wants the film based on his Green Lantern run. Longtime DC fans know his run is one of the best in Green Lantern’s history. Also, it introduces the different colored lanterns. So it’s something to be excited about. But Johns needs to be careful about how wide he casts his net with this first film. Hopefully, in his new role as writer and producer (he stepped down from DC Entertainment in June 2018), he can deliver a script that’s close to his heart and resonates with Green Lantern fans.
