Rumors are flying faster than a speeding bullet around what might be director George Miller’s next project. The Australian director, fresh off of Mad Max: Fury Road, is rumored to be in the director’s chair for the Man of Steel sequel. This wouldn’t be Miller’s first DC Comics project; he was to have directed the aborted 2007 film Justice League: Mortal.
This rumor comes from an interview on Popcorn Talk Radio with Whatever Happened To Superman Lives? director Jon Schnepp. At the 55:22 mark, Schnepp says “Yeah, George Miller,He’s doing ‘Man of Steel 2’. I don’t feel weird about breaking it. Obviously, Zack Snyder is doing ‘Justice League’ one and two. We’ve already got James Wan doing ‘Aquaman’… I think Miller is a perfect choice to do ‘Man of Steel 2.’ He’s going to bring so much to it.”‘
However, CBR has reached out to Warner Brothers and while they didn’t get full confirmation that Miller would be directing Man of Steel 2, an industry insider apparently shared information with CBR, that they haven’t revealed yet, that puts this rumor into doubt.
Miller, who first came to fame with his Mad Max film series, which helped catapult fellow Australian Mel Gibson into superstardom, and later the Happy Feet musical animation series, has given Warner Brothers its lone mega hit in a rather tepid summer for the studio. If this rumor is true, his cachet from Mad Max will have helped give him enough to do another tent pole film for Warner Brothers, and his second attempt at a DC Comics property. But as the rumor seems to be in doubt, this is a story where we’ll have to wait and see.
Mad Max: Fury Road is now playing in theaters. Man of Steel 2 has yet to be officially announced by Warner Brothers and DC Comics.
