Fans Updated on the Progress of The Winds of Winter
Quarantine has had a bit of a silver lining. Creatives have more time to be creative, and George R.R. Martin is no exception. The author of the best-selling series, A Song of Ice and Fire, has finally given us an update for the next book, The Winds of Winter. He’s working on it. And hopefully, he will finish it by 2021, after almost a decade of writing.
He goes into more detail on his blog
The Winds of Winter Update
Martin began by admitting that isolation has been a huge part of his progress.
“If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write,” he began. “I am spending long hours every day on THE WINDS OF WINTER and making steady progress. I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week. But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week. It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.”
Martin gave away no details of what to expect in the next installment, though fans already know how this story ends. HBO wrapped up Game of Thrones last year with some considerable backlash about the conclusion. However, book fans are more hopeful about how the story plays out. He mentions some fan favorites in particular.
“Of late I have been visiting with Cersei, Asha, Tyrion, Ser Barristan, and Areo Hotah,” he wrote. “I will be dropping back into Braavos next week. I have bad days, which get me down, and good days, which lift me, but all in all I am pleased with the way things are going.”
He also lamented having to cancel his trip to New Zealand that was scheduled for this year, but he counts it as a blessing because it would have broken his momentum on the book.
“I can always visit Wellington next year when I hope that Covid-19 and THE WINDS OF WINTER will be done,” he wrote.
So, if not published, the fans at least know he has a goal for the completed manuscript! He ended the post with: “Now you will have to excuse me. Arya is calling. I think she means to kill someone.”
