Glad for GLAAD!
GLAAD stands for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. In their About page, the organization aims to:
GLAAD rewrites the script for LGBTQ acceptance. As a dynamic media force, GLAAD tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD protects all that has been accomplished and creates a world where everyone can live the life they love.
Their Media Awards aims to honor rightful representations of the LGBTQ community. Moreover, the organization recognizes “fair, accurate and inclusive representations”.
Outstanding Video Game Award
The 30th Media Awards includes the Outstanding Video Game Award. The nominees have three points to meet. The first point is for the video game to provide an interactive experience, and second, the LGBTQ representation must be authentic. Lastly, the storyline and its characters must be impactful. Further details on judging include “taking into consideration the degree to which the LGBTQ-inclusive content is effectively woven into gameplay, including player agency and the world itself”. The awardee is the video game, to which the developers and publishers may choose to accept.
To be eligible, the video game must be in its final and public release form in the United States. The nominees’ games must be new-first party content. That means only games released from January 1 to December 31, 2018, are eligible. The nominees will be announced January 2019. Further details are on their website.
At the moment, 2018’s LGBTQ representation in video games seem to fall out of grace and certainly out of the media awards’ scope. For instance, the last part of The Last of Us II’s trailer only offers one kissing scene for protagonists Elle and Dina. Other than that, the video game won’t be here any time soon. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is offering same-sex romance options, which is not an overall representation.
It’s still September so it’s too early to judge how the awarding will go. In an age of Social Awakening, recognizing accuracy and giving proper representation is of utmost importance. Wishing all the luck for nominees and for GLAAD.
A massive injection of nerd!
