Green Lantern Series to Launch on HBO Max

Green Lanterns Greenlit for HBO Max

Green Lantern is coming to the small screen. The heroes that make up the spacefaring cops will debut in an HBO Max series. According to Variety, the series will focus on several Lanterns and their villains. The first season will be comprised of 10 hour-long episodes. Among the various heroes will be Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. Also starring in the series will be Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern. Alan Scott will also be gay, as the character has been since his update in the New 52 Earth 2 series, and furthermore in the recent Green Lantern anniversary special. In addition, characters such as Kilowog and Sinestro will make appearances.

The showrunner will be Lego Batman writer Seth Grahame-Smith. Grahame-Smith will be assisted by Arrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim, who will co-produce. Guggenheim co-wrote the 2011 Green Lantern film, making this a return to the character.

Green Lantern Joins HBO Max DC Lineup

This announced series bolsters the already growing line of DC shows on the streaming service. Warner Brothers recently announced that HBO Max will be the new home of the DC Universe original shows. The DC Universe platform itself is shutting down on tv shows to be a comics-only platform. In addition, there have been announced series such as Justice League Dark, and Suicide Squad spinoff for Peacemaker, played by John Cena. In addition to those is a growing back catalogue of past DC movies and tv series. HBO Max is quickly becoming the go-to service for DC Comics media.

Three Missing Lanterns

However, there are three noticeable names missing from the announcement. Fan-favorite characters Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart, and Kyle Rayner are not announced to be in the series. Rumor has it that Hal and Jon will appear in the eventual Green Lantern film, possibly explaining why they will likely not appear in the series. As for Kyle Rayner, could there be a chance that the “Torchbearer” of the Corps will debut on this series?

There is no announced start date yet for the series. Please stay tuned to Word of the Nerd for more information.
