Last July, Marvel Studios brought an A+ presentation to San Diego Comic Con. There was a new trailer for Doctor Strange, it was confirmed the the Planet Hulk story line would be incorporated into Thor: Ragnarok, they showed the room a teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 that included both Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone (!), and Brie Larson was confirmed as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Marvel has always done a good job when it comes to PR and making announcements, and this year’s Comic Con presentation was no different. In all of the major announcements and breaking news though, there wasn’t any talk about the Avengers’ next adventure.
Vin Diesel is happy to oblige.
During a Facebook Live Chat (via Screen Rant), Diesel gave a detail regarding a previously unconfirmed scoop when it comes to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. In a very Groot-like, nonchalant way, Diesel clearly and confidently said:
“Next year you’ve got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming and that whole concept started from you all saying ‘when are you gonna be in a Marvel movie?’ And you remember the first picture after that Marvel meeting that I had where I was standing [with] the Avengers thing in the back – some of you can look up that picture…there was this old Avengers copy that was behind me in that picture if you look back on my Facebook page you can find that.
What’s gonna be surreal is that picture is going to come to pass because now the Guardians will be included in Avengers: Infinity War and that’s incredibly exciting. Incredibly exciting. Incredibly exciting and something that if you were a part of our page you knew before everybody.”
How Will The Guardians Interact With the Avengers?
You have to wonder how Kevin Feige and the other Marvel Execs feel when their actors share news like this before they want it out. Now, there is no negative side to people knowing the Guardians will be in Infinity War. But as we’ve seen with their Comic Con panels and other PR events, Marvel Studios love to put on a show (there will probably still be some “official” announcement where they bring out the entire cast of the film, which is sure to be at least 95 people at this point).
Premature announcement or not, this is some exciting news. Currently, there is some confusion over the Previously Title Avengers: Infinity War – Part II, but we definitely know what 2018’s Infinity War will be about. After three appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (barely even substantiating the definition of “cameo”), Thanos (Josh Brolin) will insert the six Infinity Stones into his Infinity Gauntlet and bring destruction to earth. The entire MCU has been leading to this conflict, and it only makes sense that both sets of heroes (earth-bound and space-bound) have to work together to take him on.
This is the kind of stuff that nerds love to fanfic about. Will Ant-Man have a conversation with Rocket Racoon? Will Gamora, Black Widow, and Captain Marvel show the boys how it’s done? Will Star Lord and Tony Stark have a dance off? The possibilities are endless! Now, it is a pretty smart bet to guess that the Guardians won’t have too big of a role in the film, there are just too many players. But their inclusion is sure to help Infinity War along in being one of the biggest event films of all time.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 will be released on May 5, 2017, and Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled to hit theaters one year later on May 4, 2018.
