Guardians Of The Galaxy is on it’s way to theaters on August 1st of 2014. If you are one of the rabid fans anxiously awaiting the film, you may be chomping at the bit to see the new trailer slated to release today. Initially rumored to be part of the Superbowl advertising blitz, the trailer was supplanted by previews for other Disney properties including Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Muppets Most Wanted. Now it seems, due to a tweet by Yahoo Singapore, alert fans have been warned that the first trailer will be shown tonight during Jimmy Kimmel Live (unless it hits the internet first).
Of all the upcoming marvel movies, this one needs the most press and is the biggest gamble (or maybe not). The characters are mostly unknown to those outside the comic book reading public. With the exception of brief appearances on animated series Marvel’s The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man, the team has barely scratched the surface of public consciousness. Certainly the preview scene that was tacked on to Thor: The Dark World wasn’t the best example of what the fans hope to see when the film comes out. Grand space epics with multiple sentient alien races (such as Star Trek and Star Wars) of the sort that inspired the band of space faring misfits when Guardians first appeared have largely fallen out of favor in recent years. The lack of connection to the Marvel films characters we know and love further distances this film from the shared universe we’ve been treated to so far from Disney/Marvel.
It all adds up to a big roll of the dice for Disney. Will the story resonate with an audience who doesn’t already know and love them? Will a space epic with a talking raccoon be taken seriously? Will it bear enough resemblance to the source material to keep the fans of the comics happy?
I’ll be there to find out on August 1st, and I’ll be setting my DVR to catch the 1st preview tonight, so I know whether or not to get my hopes up.
