Another One Bites the Dust
Well, after putting Vertigo out to pasture, it looks like DC Comics wasn’t done yet with some shocking news. Earlier this week Editors at MAD Magazine tweeted out that the satirical magazine was next on the chopping block. It is to be noted that nothing official has been said yet. But DC is looking to rebrand under three labels of DC, DC Kids, and DC Black Label.
MAD has been bringing smiles and laughs to faces since 1952. I personally can remember my brother having a subscription for a while and reading them when he was done with them. It always had such a great oddball sense of humor and some fantastic cartooning as well throughout the pages. Those folding images were always works of brilliance!
MAD Magazine has influenced tons of creators and artists throughout the years and they all showed their disappointment on Twitter as the news broke. The magazine was also popular enough to spawn a late-night sketch television show, MAD TV, from 1995-2009. Not bad for something that started out as an EC comic book.
Gone, but Not Forgotten
Deadline notes that details of the apparent end of MAD Magazine still remain elusive. “Writers, editors and others affiliated with the long-running humor magazine took to social media today to lament the apparent passing of a publication that served as the introduction to satire for many. Mad is now owned by DC, which has shuttered a few titles recently and is reorganizing under three specific brands. Some contributors (aka ‘the usual gang of idiots’) alluded to an email that was sent out informing them of the shuttering, but details remained elusive for the general population.”
So, there still could be hope yet for the Magazine. While maybe not in print form, the title could certainly live on in digital format. For something that has been around for so long and influenced so many people, I doubt that it will be gone forever. It may take a short hiatus or something, but I am certain MAD will not be gone forever!
Update via Newsarama: it looks like issues #9 and #10 of MAD Magazine will have new content, but after that, it will be reprinted, just with new covers on the reprinted issues.
