Hasbro Movie Universe Struggles to Succeed

Hasbro Films Fail to Come Together

Hasbro is one of the largest toy companies in the world. However, when it comes to forays in film, they do not have a successful record. While the Transformers series is a big hit at the box office, the films are not critical darlings. Their other big film franchise, G.I. Joe, had two flop films.

However, this hasn’t stopped Hasbro’s ambition for a film universe to rival Marvel. Hasbro had plans to develop Rom: Spaceknight and M.A.S.K. films. Plans for this universe began in 2015, with writers such as Spider-Man Homecoming scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. However, since then, there has not been a peep about it. In an interview with IGN, Goldstein said:

“Those are probably not likely to see the light of day, unless they’re moving on separate from us. It’s a funny thing. We spent three weeks in a room with a lot of talented writers. We broke 11 or so movies and, I don’t know. It just kind of went into the vortex. There’s been some leadership changes at Paramount, so it’s hard to say. Nobody’s contacted us about those.”

What We Can Expect

Hasbro Transformers Live-Action BumblebeeAs of this writing, the next Hasbro film to be released is the Bumblebee spinoff of the Transformers franchise. Bumblebee’s solo will be released this December. According to Hasbro and partner studio Paramount, that film would be separate from the rest of the films’ universe. In addition, a G.I. Joe reboot is tapped for March of 2020 and a Micronauts film is set for October 2020.

Other than that, Hasbro’s grand plan seems to have stalled out. This might be in part due to leadership changes at Paramount, as Goldstein said. It also may be due to the critical drubbing most Hasbro films have gotten. While they made plenty of money with the Transformers series, each film had diminishing returns. The most recent Transformers film, The Last Knight, made about $605 million, $500 million less than its predecessor. To put it in perspective, the “flop” Justice League film made $50 million more.

Perhaps with this planned G.I. Joe reboot, Hasbro can get back on track. That could be the start of their whole new universe. However, as of now, they are in uncharted waters.
