Hulu to Launch Multiple Marvel Animated Series

Marvel Announces Several “Adult” Animated Series on Hulu

Marvel maybe dead on Netflix, but not all their properties are going to the Disney+ streaming service. Deadline reported yesterday that Marvel plans to launch four adult-themed animated series on Hulu streaming services very soon. We are getting a Howard the Duck animated series with none other than “The Clerk” himself, Kevin Smith, and Dave Willis helming it. Then we have several surprising entries with Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., and Marvel’s Hit-Monkey. Then, because everything is “connected,” all these shows will combine in a The Offenders special. Jeph Loeb will be overseeing all of these projects.

A Whole New World

This was a surprising announcement on several different levels. First, Marvel hasn’t done a lot with animation recently and now they are jumping into the more adult-oriented pool. It does make sense with the Fox merger that Disney will be using Hulu for their more “adult” themed material, much like the way it used Netflix for its television series.

Speaking of the Fox merger: is this the first big thing to happen from it? Dazzler is most definitely a mutant whom I would presume would fall under Fox ownership at the moment. To my knowledge, the Disney/Fox deal hasn’t completely been finalized, so something must be up. Also, Hit-Monkey, I would think, would fall under the Deadpool rights, which also falls under Fox ownership. This is very interesting, in that there might be other characters and projects in the works already that Marvel previously did not have the rights to as well!

Probably the most surprising is that M.O.D.O.K is getting a show. Yes, the Mental/Mobile/Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing” or the giant floating head with tiny arms and legs supervillain. I guess it is not that surprising; MODOK hasn’t been taken seriously in the comics for quite some time, so a more comedic route for him in an animated version is a good fit. Also, animating Howard the Duck is a good call and will hopefully redeem his character from his bomb of a movie in 1986.

Defenders, Stand Up!

The first thing that really popped into my head when I heard the news about these new shows was not about the shows at all. I was more like: please let Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones (season 3 is about to premier but we know) and The Punisher (just announce the cancellation already!) come to Hulu! I wrote a lot about this after Daredevil was canceled after its third season, and Hulu would be a perfect fit for these shows. Obviously, they don’t fit the Disney+ theme, so why not Hulu?

Hulu already has The Runaways, so why not throw The Defenders into the mix? The kids have been battling their parents for two seasons. Let The Defenders come in and help with their problems!

Conclusion

This is all-around cool news. Disney is using Hulu for some very interesting projects. It seems Disney is not going to shy away from more adult-themed things. Also, some less well-known characters are getting the spotlight. Even though it is in animated form, it is still very cool to see Tigra get a little bit of a shine. Are you excited about the news of these shows? Which one are you most excited for? What other characters would you like to see get the Marvel/Hulu treatment? Let us know in the comments.
