Ian McKellen Shares in this New Documentary
For fans of Gandalf and Magneto, there’s an opportunity for you to learn about the man behind the character. Ian McKellen is releasing the untold story of his life through a documentary, McKellen: Playing the Part. The movie will be shown in cinemas May 27, and McKellen is presenting the film along with other legends like Martin Freeman, Graham Norton, and Derek Jacobi.
Ian McKellen is a well-known and beloved icon. His acting career has spanned over fifty years and it seems there is no talk of stopping. He started with theater, mostly appearing in Shakespearean productions. He made his professional debut in 1961 as Roper in A Man for All Seasons at the Belgrade Theater in Coventry, UK. Initially, he did not have a strong desire to be a film star, and did not get a leading role until 1980 in Priest of Love. Thankfully he changed his mind. He became a household name in the ’90s for his roles in Richard III and Gods and Monsters. He then went on to star in two major franchises, X-Men and Lord of the Rings, as well as so many other films.
His talent earned him six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a British Independent Films Award, two Saturn Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and two Critics’ Choice Awards. He earned nominations for two Oscars, four BAFTAs, and five Emmys.
Not only is he talented, but he is invested in the world. He has been out of the closet since 1988. He came out in an interview where he debated a conservative journalist on the issue of same-sex marriage. Since then, he has been fundamental in supporting the LGBT community through outspokenness and activism in marches and other Pride events. Ian McKellen co-founded Stonewall, a UK-based LGBT lobbying group. He is a patron of LGBT History Month, Pride London, Oxford Pride, GAY-GLOS, The Lesbian & Gay Foundation, and FFLAG. He gives his time and money to various other charities as well, but there are really too many to name.
There is so much to appreciate about this man. His skill and his character make him worthy enough, but the movies he’s worked on mean he has a TON of stories to tell. I can’t wait to see what’s in store in this film.
