Idris Elba recently revealed in an interview with the Huffington Post that he was once in talks with Marvel to play Luke Cage but the deal evaporated into the ether. While the character Luke Cage is set to have his own live-action Netflix show I can’t help but feel that we as an audience were robbed when it comes to seeing Elba in the role on the big screen.
And before you say it; yes I know that Elba has portrayed Heimdall in the Thor movies but that should not be seen as an impediment to him portraying another character in the Marvel Universe since Chris Evans has played both Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four (not an Marvel movie, but still a character from the Marvel Universe). Further to the point, Sir Ian Mckellen proves that if the actor is the best for the role they are best for the role regardless of their participation in other franchises.
That being said I’m going to offer my own two cents into the disscusion and nominate Elba for the role of Black Panther in anything really. While I am not the biggest fan of T’challa (I’m a Storm/Logan shipper) I believe that Elba is one of the only actors that would make me excited about the King of Wakanda being brought to life on either the big or small screens. He has proven himself to be a major player in the genre with his work on Prometheus and Pacific Rim. There is still a slight chance that Elba may still get the chance to play Luke Cage in the Netflix series but no word is available on that at this time.
With the way that the Marvel Universe has been invading every form of media like they were hit with an origin bomb anything is possible in the next few years. Who knows one day my eyes might be given the gift of seeing Elba as Black Panther and Zachary Quinto as Namor (think about it, you know that would be awesome) fighting it out in Wakanda. The likelihood of this is probably the same as me doing the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs on my bike but a girl can dream.
