Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man #1, which is set to be released this fall, already has more than 200,00 pre-orders from American comic book stores. This indicates that the book will eventually sell over one million copies, which is a startlingly large number. To put that number in perspective, Superior Iron Man #1 premiered to almost 84,000 copies. Iron Man sold around 116,530 copies, and Invincible Iron Man sold around 116,250 copies. Invincible Iron Man #1 is already preordering at TWICE those numbers, which means that the people likely to walk into their local comic book store to pick up a copy is greatly increased.
There are a couple of theories about why Invincible Iron Man #1 is doing so well. One of those theories centers around the talent behind this issue: Brian Michael Bendis is writing the issue, and David Marquez is illustrating. However, another possible factor behind the issue’s success is Invincible Iron Man #1’s position in Marvel’s release lineup. Invincible Iron Man #1 is going to be one of the first Marvel Universe comic books after Secret Wars is released. This might mean that comic book fans will use Invincible Iron Man #1 as a litmus test, a way to judge how much the status quo might have broadly changed by looking at a singular comic book. If that possibility is correct, the numbers could radically drop after this issue, which would be bad news forInvincible Iron Man. Another possible theory is that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are going to use Invincible Iron Man #1 as a jumping off point to get into the comics. Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark is a very popular character, maybe even popular enough to draw non comic book readers to comics in droves.
Of course, the preorder numbers are not set in stone. The deadline to preorder (or cancel said preorder) Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man #1 is August 10th. The numbers could theoretically radically change by then, but it is rather unlikely that they will do so. Additionally, Marvel has not actually confirmed these numbers, so the estimates could be way off (but they probably aren’t).
Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man #1 is to be released this October.
