James Gunn Back in the Director’s Chair at Marvel

Marvel Studios has re-hired James Gunn

James Gunn Re-Hired by Marvel

Well, it has been an exciting few weeks at Marvel Studios. Captain Marvel has premiered to great fanfare. Just yesterday the new Avengers: Endgame trailer dropped and nearly made me have a heart attack. They also announced a director for the Shang-Chi movie. The studio even confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would use James Gunn’s script. Just nobody really wanted to take over the director’s chair. Well, it looks like that is not a worry, as Deadline reports James Gunn has been re-hired by Marvel Studios!

If you do not remember, James Gunn was fired by Disney/Marvel Studios after some ill-considered jokes by the director were dredged back up from his Twitter account. Everybody got up in arms and Disney fired the director. All of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast were not too excited about Gunn’s exit and Dave Bautista noted that he would exit as Drax if Gunn was not rehired.

Well, life moved on and Warner Brothers snatched up Gunn and have reportedly inked him to direct Suicide Squad 2. Will this throw a wrench in Gunn directing the Suicide Squad sequel? No, according to the Deadline report. “Gunn’s return to Guardians of the Galaxy 3 got complicated when he signed on to write and direct the Suicide Squad sequel for Warner Bros and DC. Marvel Studios has agreed to commence production on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after Gunn completes Suicide Squad 2. Making the whole thing easier though was the fact that Marvel Studios never met with or considered any other director for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, despite speculation that Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi and Vice helmer Adam McKay were in the mix.”

Short-Term Memory

I said this when Gunn first got fired. But here we go again. Marvel should have just published Gunn’s apology and left it at that. We all know the news cycle moves so fast that, after a while, almost everyone would have forgotten. So, now it kind of pops back up that they have had to backtrack and re-hire him. Were his jokes distasteful and not funny? Yes. Were they from a long time ago, and do people change and feel stupid about past mistakes? Yes. But, now we have to go through this all again for a little while until everybody forgets again.

But now I am also excited to have him back in the director’s chair for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I was not the biggest fan of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but I am interested to see what he does with the third installment, especially after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Plus the addition of the Skrulls into the MCU with Captain Marvel.
