James Gunn Writing Suicide Squad 2
“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is a saying Warner Brothers has taken to heart. As quickly as Disney has thrown James Gunn to the curb for his questionable jokes on Twitter, Warner Brothers has picked him up from the gutter to write and maybe even direct Suicide Squad 2. That is, if the news is to be believed.
From Guardians to the Squad
Now, I’m not here to discuss whether it was right or wrong for Disney to fire Gunn. We have already done that here at Word of the Nerd (you can check out one writer’s opinion here). A simple google search will pull up a wealth of articles. What I want to do is speculate on what this could mean for DC’s Movie Universe.
Thanks to Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2 added a unique flavor to the MCU. It was like nothing else in the MCU at the time and Gunn’s writing and directing had a lot to do with its success. He took unknown, probably D-List characters and made them household names. Can he bring that same flavor to the DC Movie Universe?
Suicide Squad had a mixed reception and it seemed to try and get that “Guardians” feel with its music and offbeat characters. It suffered from uneven storytelling and tone. But, it also made quite a bit of money despite poor reception. James Gunn may be the perfect person to put all that together with a clean execution in Suicide Squad 2. Gunn’s attachment will bring a lot more attention to the film as well. I feel like Gunn can put the pieces together and make gold out of the Suicide Squad.
Reception is Key
Essentially, the major mystery is how will Gunn be received after being outed by Disney? Will people still boycott him and refuse to see Suicide Squad 2? Quick personal opinion is no. I feel it is a smart move by Warner Brothers; by the time the movie is written and filmed probably at least 2 years will have passed since this controversy and nobody will remember or care anymore. It will be brought up again, surely, but I doubt it will make enough of a splash the second time around.
It sounds like a win/win for Warner Brothers and DC if this happens; they get a talented director with a little controversy attached to him to add extra attention to Suicide Squad 2. I guess we will see if “any publicity is good publicity” is true. Do you think Gunn is the right person to write or direct Suicide Squad 2? Let see us know in the comments.
