You know you have made it as a cosplayer when you get a shout out on the Tumblr of one of the biggest media houses in the world. No amount of praise seems to do justice to Jay Justice, a New York cosplayer that has come a very long way as a cosplayer in her 5 years. Marvel Entertainment did a spotlight on her work to round out Costoberfest, highlighting some of her best work. She is also currently on tour with Marvel Live, and her Facebook page shows a rapidly growing cosplay repertoire, to include video games such as Mass Effect.
Last year, I met Jay Justice briefly at New York Comic Con. While it was just a quick “hello” and “love the costume”, I remember how much I adored her aura, very humble and approachable. Also, when she is spoken of by the few mutual friends we share in the New York area, I know that she is a well-respected and well-loved individual. She is truly a great person, and to a novice cosplayer like myself, her work is an inspiration and encourages me to be confident in my work as an artist. Jay Justice, we love you! Continue to make us proud!
While do not have set aspirations to work with Broadway, Marvel, DC, or Hasbro, seeing Jay and so many other cosplayers in the New York circle prosper, it motivates me to do better each time. It encourages me to seek any door that can be opened by my ever-growing skill set. I encourage you as always, fellow novice cosplayers, to keep up the good work. Every work in progress is more a success than it was the day you bought the fabric and notions necessary to bring the character to life. Like Jay Justice, we must work, strive, and live our art no matter what. Until next time, Readers, hugs and stitches!
