Jean-Luc Picard Will Take On A Different Role in New Star Trek Series
Fans of Star Trek were thrilled to hear a new installment of the franchise is coming to CBS All Access later this year. However, there will be some changes: namely, that Jean-Luc Picard is no longer a Starfleet captain.
What We Know
There is still a lot we don’t know when it comes to what CBS is calling the Picard series. We know Picard is not a captain, but has moved on to other things in his life.
Jonathan Frakes, who directed episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the most recent episode of Star Trek: Discovery, told Dateline a little more about what is expected. He explained that it will be different from Next Generation. Stewart is not even playing Picard in this one! Stewart, like his character, is moving on in his career.
“Patrick and I had a steak dinner a couple of weeks ago and this man, who I’ve known for thirty-one years now, is so excited about this show he’s like a little kid,” Frakes said. “It’s fabulous! He’s thrilled and excited to be invited into the writer’s room and he’s a producer on the show and he’s part of the development of the story arc. It’s terrific.”
Stewart somewhat revealed this part of Picard’s life when he announced the show at Star Trek Las Vegas.
“He may not be a captain anymore,” he said. “He may not be the Jean-Luc you recognize and know so well. It may be a very different individual. Someone who has been changed by his experiences. Twenty years will have passed…We have no scripts as yet, we’re just talking, talking, talking storylines. It will be, I promise you, I guarantee it, something very, very different, but it will come to you with the same passion and determination and love of our followers and our fans exactly as we had it before.”
