Jena Malone May Play Johanna Mason in Catching Fire

Philip Seymour Hoffman is rumored to be a contender for the role of Plutarch Heavensbee. There is a lot of buzz surrounding Catching Fire, the follow-up to this year’s smash The Hunger Games. Now that a director has been secured, the time has come to begin casting the ensemble that will help Katniss and Peeta in the rest of the series. There are significant characters introduced in both Catching Fire and Mockingjay and the  task at hand right now is to find the perfect actors and actresses to help continue the series. There has been recent debate as to who should play Finnick Odair, a tribute from District Four with names like Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, and (my own choice) Johnathan Groff (who plays Jesse St. James on Glee). Phillip Seymour Hoffman is reportedly being courted for the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, head gamemaker who replaces Seneca Crane (played by Wes Bentley), who is a major player in both Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

Jena Malone is reportedly in the running for the role of Johanna Mason in Catching Fire.

Without revealing too many spoilers as to who these major characters are, there is another significant figure in Johanna Mason. She is a tribute from District 7, though it is never identified as to which games she won. However, we do know that she did win by pretending to be weak, which allowed her to come back and completely slaughter her opponents. An air of scheming and duplicity would definitely be needed for the role. Several actresses have been announced as contenders for this character including Kristen Bell (who vehemently wishes to be in the film) and Emma Stone.

However, newest reports include Sucker Punch actress Jena Malone as a frontrunner for the role of the ball-busting Johanna Mason. She is certainly about the age of the character and she has played a lot of fiesty characters, so I think she might be a good fit. As with anything, time will tell and I am sure we will find out soon who will be playing each of the new (and coveted) roles. Filming is set to begin later this year and must work around Jennifer Lawrence’s schedule. She’ll be filming the sequel to X-Men: First Class in which she plays Raven/Mystique.

Who would you fantasy cast for rest of The Hunger Games series? If you had to go back, would you cast someone else for Katniss and Peeta? Haymitch?
