Season 7 scripts are our and filming will be starting soon which means Game of Thrones updates, speculation, and on set photos will be spammed across the internet faster than the army of wights currently barreling toward the wall. One of surely many new castings has been announced, and with it, speculation abounds. The newest cast member to join the show is Oscar winner and celebrated English actor Jim Broadbent. The community will probably know him best as Professor Horace Slughorn from the Harry Potter films, but he has quite an extensive and varied resume. Other movies include Gangs of New York, Moulin Rouge!, and Iris, where he won his Oscar. He also plays the Prime Minister in the new Legend of Tarzan movie. He was even nominated for and Emmy for his roll in the TV movie Longford. He’s a talented and diverse actor and the fandom welcomes him to the family.
But Who is Jim Broadbent Playing?
As usual, HBO hasn’t released much about the character Broadbent will be playing, but speculation about it has already begun to make rounds. The theory most supported by the Word of the Nerd staff is a Maester of the Citidel, one specifically that will be advising Samwell Tarly one his journey to become a Maester himself. There is a popular fan-theory that he may be playing Archmaester Marwyn himself. This could be significant for someone other than Sam, however; Daenerys. Marwyn believes the stories of the dragons born across the narrow sea are true, and when he speaks to Sam and hears his story, he declares that he is going to go and meet Daenerys, hurrying off to catch a ship called the Cinnamon Wind, on it’s way to Meereen. However, we know now that Dany isn’t in Meereen anymore, so who knows what he’ll be doing when he makes his debut on the show.
The only tidbit that fans have received is that his roll will be “significant”, though fans know that this doesn’t necessarily know he’ll be long lived in the series, so we can only guess so much. Hopefully we’ll get some hints about his character soon.
