‘Justice League Dark’ animated film confirmed in new featurette

Warner Bros. next entry into its DC animated movie universe will be Justice League Dark.

Although its been widely speculated that Justice League Dark would be the follow up to Batman: The Killing Joke, it was little more than a rumor until this week. Now we can put the rumors to rest as confirmation on the project has come in the form of a leaked sneak peek for the movie found on The Killing Joke’s special features.

‘Justice League Dark’ footage revealed

The footage for the film isn’t fully complete as the sneak peek makes use of storyboards, but what was shown looks excellent. Although DC’s live action movie universe is a few steps behind the competition, its animated fare has long dominated the genre.

This incarnation of Justice League Dark will feature Zatanna, Etrigan the Demon, Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Black Orchid and Dead Man. Viewers will be introduced to this world through the eyes of Batman, who will be voiced once again by Jason O’Mara.

Matt Ryan returns as Constantine

The biggest revelation from this featurette is the fact that Matt Ryan will be reprising the role of John Constantine for Justice League Dark. Ryan played Constantine in NBC’s cancelled television show adaptation and, more recently, in an episode of CW’s Arrowconstantine justice league dark

Clearly Ryan isn’t ready to let go of the supernatural detective just yet, and I’m fine with that. In the sneak peek, he explains that he wanted to play Constantine in a different context than before and be featured alongside other iconic characters from the DC Dark world.

Is the live action Justice League Dark dead?

For years now there have been rumors of a live-action Justice League Dark movie in the works with Guillermo Del Toro as the driving force. Information about the project was always slow to get out, but Del Toro seemed to be determined. As with many of his projects, however, nothing has materialized. With an animated adaptation on the way, it will probably be a long wait for a live action version.

Justice League Dark is directed by Jay Oliva and features voice performances by Matt Ryan, Jason O’Mara, Camilla Luddington, Nicholas Turturro and Ray Chase. It is expected to be released on Blu-Ray, DVD and VOD this fall.
