Rumors about the Justice League and Batman Vs. Superman films continue to surface at an almost daily rate. The latest rumor to cross the desktops of the WOTN staff states that filming of the first Justice League film may begin just as filming completes on Batman Vs. Superman. The idea of holding on to a group of actors for the length of production on a film and it’s sequel is hardly new and is often an excellent idea. The Hobbit films, Lord Of The Rings, Back to the Future II and III even The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (okay, so maybe it’s not always a good idea).
Apparently the buzz surrounding the casting of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a WB/DC film may have a lot more to do with a larger role in Justice League than in Batman Vs. Superman. We could easily be seeing something akin to, presumably with more screen time, the appearances of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in Iron Man II and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in Thor. It would also lend credence to the rumors about Nightwing, The Flash and Green Lantern possibly showing up in the films. WB/DC is using Man of Steel as a springboard for their cinematic universe, and may then be reversing the Marvel method (a slate of solo hero movies followed by a team film). Instead the studio could be giving us a solo film, a pair-of-heroes film with lots of heroic cameos to whet our appetite for the big team film to come.
If that’s the plan (which seems logical based on the output of the rumor mill) then maintaining the momentum of Superman Vs. Batman by keeping the cast of the first film around to fast produce the sequel makes perfect sense. Actors get busy and with the number of big names involved it could be very difficult to get them all back together to make a second film in a timely fashion (look how long we had to wait to get this years Sin City sequel).
Lots of this is educated guesswork at this point, though if true, it’s nice that audiences won’t have to wait forever for the already overdue Justice League film.
