Kickstarter Hot Picks – April 1-15, 2018
Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. 2017 marked the first time that the Games category took the top spot on Kickstarter, with the number of Tabletop Games projects having grown significantly, up 18% from 2016.
Tabletop Games have constantly grown over the past few years, both in terms of the total amount of money raised, and the number of projects funded. After a record year in 2016, the subcategory grew again, by +36% in 2017. The number of funded projects grew by +20%. There is no doubt that Kickstarter is a serious driving force in the content being supplied in the board gaming industry.
In the latest roundup of Kickstarter Hot Picks, dogs rescue their hoomans in the zombie apocalypse, royal architects compete to impress their King by constructing various landmarks throughout his newly appointed domain, and you build a Railroad Empire across America.
Let’s take a look at these hot Kickstarter campaigns…
Good Dog, Bad Zombie: A Cooperative Board Game
Good Dog, Bad Zombie is a cooperative board game, where everyone plays together as a heroic dog pack. Together, you’ll explore a post-apocalyptic city while sniffing out scents, barking at the undead, and herding hoomans to safety. Good Dog, Bad Zombie is for 2 – 4 players, and takes 45 – 60 minutes to play. Choose your preferred difficulty setting when the game begins – take it easy with the “Walk in the Park,” or fend off a massive zombie onslaught with the “Hounds of the Barkalypse” setup. Whatever you decide, you can expect an adventure full of close calls, laughing players, and doggie heroics!
Your goal in Good Dog, Bad Zombie is to find the scaredy hoomans that are hiding around the crumbling metropolis. To do so, you’ll have to investigate scent tokens in different city locations, such as Squirreltown, the Boneyard, and Worst Place. When you do find a hooman, your job isn’t done yet. You’ll need to use your energy cards—and the support of the other dogs in your pack—to lead the hooman to safety. Use cards like “RUFF RUFF BARK GRR-RUFF RUFF!!!” and “Hooman in danger! HOOMAN IN DANGER!!” to guide the hooman away from hungry zombies!
As you play, new zombies will spawn throughout the city and constantly move toward Central Bark! To keep all your hoomans safe, you’ll need to fend off the zombies. Chase them far enough, and they’ll tumble over the cliffs or be swept away in the river. Find and rescue 6 hoomans, and Central Bark will become your new forever home. Everyone wins! But every time a hooman is lost to the horde or a zombie slips into Central Bark, your pack becomes more feral. If the feral track reaches 10, your pack reverts to the ways of their wolf ancestors and forgets what it means to feel the love of a hooman. Everyone loses!
Good Dog, Bad Zombie: Cool Pledges
The pledges are the coolest thing about this campaign. A pledge of $35 receives a copy of the Good Dog, Bad Zombie base game. Add another $20 to also receive the “Weird Smells” and “Unlikely Allies” expansions in addition to the base game.
If you pledge $75, in addition to the above rewards, you’ll get a customized character sheet and token featuring a real-world dog of your choosing. You’ll select your dog’s special ability and submit a photo. You’ll receive a physical and a digital version of the customized pup. And if you don’t have your own dog, you can choose an adoptable dog from the One Tail at a Time shelter into the game. Also at this level, you’ll be boosting the gift basket for the One Tail at a Time rescue shelter by contributing to the purchase of one item off of the rescue agency’s wish list for a dog in need.
You can also play the game as your own pack of dogs for a pledge of $150. In addition to the base game and both expansions, you can submit up to 4 dogs and 12 hoomans to include in your game. You’ll choose their in-game powers, and supply a photo of each dog. In return, you’ll receive customized sheets, tokens, and cards so you can play with all the dogs you know to rescue real-world hoomans! You’ll receive both digital and physical copies.
For a pledge of $300, you can have your dog (or a special rescue dog from One Tail at a Time rescue shelter) illustrated into the game. In addition to all the rewards above, your dog will be drawn into the game, and every copy of Good Dog, Bad Zombie will feature your dog’s likeness.
So many cool pledges, I’m trying to decide which one to choose!
The campaign ends on Thursday, April 12, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 249% funded.
Architects of the West Kingdom
Architects of the West Kingdom is set at the end of the Carolingian Empire, circa 850 AD. As royal architects, players compete to impress their King and maintain their noble status by constructing various landmarks throughout his newly appointed domain. Players will need to collect raw materials, hire apprentices and keep a watchful eye on their workforce. These are treacherous times. Rival architects will stop at nothing to slow your progress. Will you remain virtuous, or be found in the company of thieves and black marketeers?
Architects of the West Kingdom is the latest title from Garphill Games, following on from the renowned North Sea Trilogy (Raiders of the North Sea, Explorers of the North Sea, etc.). Architects of the West Kingdom is the first title in a brand-new trilogy of games.
The game is a unique worker placement game for 1-5 players.
The goal is to be the player with the most Victory Points (VP) at the game’s end. Gain points by constructing various Buildings and advancing work on the Cathedral. Throughout the game, players will need to make a lot of moral decisions. However, only at the game’s end will their virtue be judged. A few underhanded deals here and there might not seem like much but may be punishable at the end. The game ends once a set number of constructions are complete.
The Architect pledge of approx. $56 USD receives the English version of Architects of the West Kingdom and one set of 5 Free Promo Packs. Add another $14 USD to also receive a set of 50 Metal Coins.
The campaign ends on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 1148% funded.
Werewords: Deluxe Edition
From Bezier Games, the creators of One Night Ultimate Werewolf, comes the updated and expanded version of the popular Werewords deduction word game – Werewords Deluxe Edition. Figure out the Magic Word with all new artwork, roles, modes, and more. The original Werewords game received a BoardGameGeek Golden Geek Award for Best Party Game for 2017.
In the original Werewords, players guess a secret word by asking YES or NO questions. Figure out the magic word before time’s up, and you win. However, one of the players is secretly a werewolf who is not only working against you, but also knows the word. If you don’t guess the word in time, you can still win by identifying the werewolf. To help out, one player is the Seer, who knows the word but must not be too obvious when helping you figure it out; if someone guesses the word, the werewolf can pull out a win by identifying the Seer.
A free iOS/Android app provides thousands of words in hundreds of categories at various difficulty levels, so everyone can play.
If you already have the original Werewords, the Deluxe Upgrade pledge of $15 is what you need. You receive replacement cards with new artwork, new roles, and all unlocked stretch goals. If not, a pledge of $25 receives one copy of Werewords Deluxe with all unlocked stretch goals.
The Ultimate Deluxe Edition pledge of $100 receives a copy of Werewords Deluxe, all unlocked stretch goals, premium plastic tokens, a 24″ Oversized Round Deluxe Playmat, a cuddly plush Lyin’ Werewolf, one pack of Custom Card Sleeves, and a Werewolf Xing sign.
