Kickstarter Hot Picks – April 16-30, 2018
Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. 2017 marked the first time that the Games category took the top spot on Kickstarter, with the number of Tabletop Games projects having grown significantly, up 18% from 2016.
Tabletop Games have constantly grown over the past few years, both in terms of the total amount of money raised, and the number of projects funded. After a record year in 2016, the subcategory grew again, by +36% in 2017. The number of funded projects grew by +20%. There is no doubt that Kickstarter is a serious driving force in the content being supplied in the board gaming industry.
In the latest roundup of Kickstarter Hot Picks, we bring dinosaurs back from extinction, steal sapphires, and explore our enchanted dreams.
Let’s take a look at these hot Kickstarter campaigns…
Dinosaur Island: Back from Extinction*
*My Kickstarter Backing Pick for April 2018
Dinosaur Island: Back from Extinction is the follow-up Kickstarter campaign from Pandasaurus Games, after the wildly successful campaign for Dinosaur Island in 2017. (Check out my review of Dinosaur Island here!) After the original campaign ended, and the good word spread, demand grew. Games sold out. People who had the retail edition wanted the deluxe edition. Games were being sold at inflated prices on the secondary market.
Hearing the demand from fans, Pandasaurus Games listened and brings us the latest campaign that not only includes a second chance to purchase the previous Kickstarter deluxe edition (with all of the cool exclusives), but also a new expansion, Totally Liquid, and an all-new stand-alone 2-player sequel, Duelosaur Island.
A pledge of $85 receives the all-new Kickstarter Exclusive X-treme edition of Dinosaur Island Base game.
This deluxe edition includes a copy of Dinosaur Island: X-treme Edition and all of the fun stretch goals of the original campaign, including the VIP meeples, extra hooligan meeples, a purple custom die, metal coins, molded plastic researched beakers, additional plot twist cards, and an all-new exclusive X-treme Edition slap bracelet.
For those who already have the original base game or retail copy of the game, there is an upgrade kit for $30 that includes these stretch goal items.
A pledge of $45 receives the all-new Kickstarter exclusive Dinosaur Island: Totally Liquid expansion for Dinosaur Island and all of the unlocked Totally Liquid stretch goals. (A copy of the Dinosaur Island base game is required to play.)
This expansion adds a 5th player to Dinosaur Island. It also adds a Blueprints Module that awards players bonus points for following the plans laid out on the card. As the campaign continues to unfold, more details will be revealed, including PR events for new scoring opportunities, additional Executive workers that add unique worker abilities for each player, and Park Extension boards that bring new islands to every player’s park.
Next is the brand new stand-alone 2 player sequel, Duelosaur Island. It includes a lot of the mechanics of the base game but introduces an entirely new hand-management tableau-building engine and a dice drafting mechanic. With the hand-management mechanism, each card serves 3 potential purposes. They contain the DNA sequences for creating dinosaurs, the blueprints for building attractions, or can be discarded to take certain actions. The first player will roll the DNA dice and give each die a different bonus, with the second player choosing the DNA to take first.
Dinosaur Island and Duelosaur Island can also be combined for even more variability in both games.
A pledge of $35 receives a copy of Duelosaur Island, all unlocked Duelosaur Island stretch goals, and 5 brand new full-color “DNA dice”.
All of the games can be backed in different combinations of pledge levels, saving on shipping. Check out the campaign page for more details. With all of the cool stretch goals (which at this rate, all are going to be unlocked by the end of the project), this is an exciting campaign for a solid and fun worker placement game.
The campaign ends on Friday, April 20, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 5,701% funded.
In one of the border towns of the Kingdom thrives a dishonest and excessively wealthy merchant. He heaps gold coins, rare fabrics, and precious rugs in his secret well-guarded hideout. Amongst his treasure, there are nine magnificent sapphires which you can only dream of.
And now the looters, thieves, and other rascals of the town have taken up a new challenge: whoever steals the most gemstones will be crowned the King of Thieves. Will you answer the call? Will you defy the forty thieves guarding the loot?
Players take turns in attempting to steal one of the nine sapphires on the table. These gemstones are surrounded by 16 tiles placed face down, concealing a thief or a special object. The top of each tile shows a colored symbol giving hidden object hints. To complete a theft, active players must form a combination of colors and symbols by revealing the four tiles surrounding the sapphire or by forming a line. If the combination is properly derived, players get the sapphire. If they fail, they get an ‘Evil Eye’ (a negative point of victory).
With the help of special tiles, the players can cause harm to or protect themselves from their opponents. The game ends when the 9 sapphires are stolen. The player with the most sapphires wins the game.
A pledge $29 CAD (~$23 USD) receives a copy of 40 Thieves and all unlocked stretch goals.
The campaign ends on Thursday, April 26, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 117% funded.
You are a light sleeper… Lost in your sleepless nights, wandering for a way to take back control of your dreams, your mind eventually rambles and brings you to the edge of an unexplored world, where landscapes move continuously. Eager to discover what lurks in those mysterious places, you decide to dive into them in a sort of lucid dream experience and find the key to a peaceful night.
Dreamscape, by Sylex, is a deep and unique game where 2 to 4 players create and explore their own enchanted “dreamscape.” Players travel between 6 dream locations and collect dream shards to build their own Dreamscape. This landscape composes elements offering tranquility, and above all, a good night’s sleep.
Unusual powers will help you to shape your dreamscape and let your dreamer stroll along and observe it to acquire peace of mind. But take care of Mr. Nightmare, lurking around the corner, ready to infest your dreams. Hopefully, too much interference of bad dreams can be avoided by optimally drifting from one location to another, using shards as keys to move more swiftly. Meanwhile, you will try to gather the ideal collection of shards, in order to build the vision that will ultimately crown you as king of the dreamscape.
Gameplay is 5 rounds, each consisting of three phases: the Emergence phase, the Travel phase, and the Creation phase. The Emergence phase is where specific elements of a player’s dreamscape are adjusted to create new opportunities inside their dreamworld. The Travel phase is where players can use up to 5 action points with their Sleepers, in the order and combination of their choice. The Creation phase is where players use the shards in their Collect Zone to create their Dreamscape, attempting to complete building challenges introduced by his Dreamcards.
A Dreamcard is complete when a player builds the configuration in his Dreamscape matching exactly the one listed on the card. Players score points and draw new Dream cards. At the end of round 5, final scoring occurs, and the player with the highest score wins.
A pledge of €45 (approx. $55 USD) receives the Dreamscape base game, the “Deep Dreams” Mini-Expansion, and all unlocked stretch goals.
The campaign ends on Thursday, April 19, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 781% funded.
