Kickstarter Hot Picks – June 1-30, 2018

Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. 2017 marked the first time that the Games category took the top spot on Kickstarter, with the number of Tabletop Games projects having grown significantly, up 18% from 2016.

Tabletop Games have constantly grown over the past few years, both in terms of the total amount of money raised, and the number of projects funded. After a record year in 2016, the subcategory grew again, by +36% in 2017. The number of funded projects grew by +20%. There is no doubt that Kickstarter is a serious driving force in the content being supplied in the board gaming industry.

In the latest roundup of Kickstarter Hot Picks, we build factories, spend a week in a castle with a werewolf, and create and evolve species of animals.

Let’s take a look at these hot Kickstarter campaigns…

Fantastic Factories: A Dice Placement Engine Building Game*

*My Kickstarter Backing Pick for June 2018

Fantastic Factories is a dice placement, engine building tabletop game by Joseph Z Chen. Players race against each other as they try to build the most efficient set of factories in the shortest amount of time in order to achieve industrial dominance.

Fantastic Factories
Kickstarter Hot Picks June 2018 – Fantastic Factories

Fantastic Factories plays 1 to 5 players and takes 45 to 60 minutes to play. Players build a set of factories into their compound and then roll dice to use as workers. With over 35 different blueprints, you can discover endless inventive and creative ways your factories can work together.

Different factories have different worker requirements. Some require a pair of matching dice. Some require a specific value. You aren’t stuck with what you roll, though. With training facilities, you can manipulate the values of your dice in order to figure out the optimal placement of all your workers. Each turn is a satisfying puzzle to solve.

Each round begins with the market phase. On their turn, they either select a face-up blueprint to add into their hand for free, or discard a card to hire the corresponding contractor. Contractors have unique effects, such as rolling additional dice or gaining resources.

During the work phase, players take their turns simultaneously. Turns start by rolling your dice, and take various actions in any order:

  • Place workers on a set of basic actions to gain more resources or draw cards
  • Build cards by discarding another card with the same tool symbol and paying the resource cost
  • Activate cards

Once all players are finished with their turns, the round is complete. The market phase occurs again, followed by the work phase. If any players have manufactured 12 or more goods or have built 10 or more cards, the following round is the final round.

A pledge of $29 receives a copy of the base game plus all unlocked stretch goals and promo cards.

The campaign ends on Thursday, June 28, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 281% funded.

One Week Ultimate Werewolf

One Week Ultimate Werewolf
Kickstarter Hot Picks – One Week Ultimate Werewolf

In One Week Ultimate Werewolf, from Bezier Games, players take the exciting gameplay of One Night Ultimate Werewolf and twists it around to create a whole new game.

One Week Ultimate Werewolf takes the gameplay into the eerie rooms of Ludwig Castle. It comes with 12 unique rooms. Only 3 are used during each game, allowing for high replayability. Each room has its own special ability, and those abilities contribute to solving the mystery of who is the werewolf.

The goal of the game is the same as the original—use social deduction to determine the roles of your opponents. Each day you enter the room with a role with a special ability, and as night falls, you interact with the others in the room with you. There are also 3 staff members with secret roles that roam the castle and interact with the players.

A pledge of $45 receives one copy of One Week Ultimate Werewolf and all unlocked stretch goals. Add an additional $15 to also receive premium plastic Role & Artifact tokens. A pledge of $100 receives a copy of the base game, plus 50 card sleeves, a Lyin’ Werewolf plush animal, the premium plastic Role & Artifact tokens, and a 24″ round playmat. There is also a 4#00 collectors pledge that receives a lot of cool stuff.

The campaign ends on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 1,271% funded.

Darwin’s Choice

In Darwin’s Choice, by Treecer, create your own species, guide them through the ever-changing eras, and become Darwin’s Choice.

Darwin's Choice
Kickstarter Hot Picks – Darwin’s Choice

The objective for each player is to create animal species that are as optimally adapted as possible. The core elements are the vegetation zones and the animal cards. All vegetation zones have an individual food supply and different requirements to fulfill. Only these can obtain enough food for themselves in the vegetation zones, which is crucial for their survival.

Between the eras played, vegetation zone changes plus effects of event cards transform the prevailing conditions. Using sophisticated mutations, players can improve already established animal species or save endangered species from extinction. Players may also move their animal species to other vegetation zones to ensure their survival or even establish the species at the top of the food chain. The goal is to collect as many Darwin points as possible with their most adaptable and strongest animal species. If a species dies out, then all but one of its obtained Darwin points are lost.

A pledge of CHF 39 (approx. $39 USD) receives a copy of Darwin’s Choice with all unlocked stretch goals. A pledge of CHF 20 (approx. $20 USD) receives a copy for Steam.

The campaign ends on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 1,271% funded.
