Kickstarter Hot Picks – November 2018

Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. 2017 marked the first time that the Games category took the top spot on Kickstarter, with the number of Tabletop Games projects having grown significantly, up 18% from 2016.

Tabletop Games have constantly grown over the past few years, both in terms of the total amount of money raised, and the number of projects funded. After a record year in 2016, the subcategory grew again, by +36% in 2017. The number of funded projects grew by +20%. There is no doubt that Kickstarter is a serious driving force in the content being supplied in the board gaming industry.

In the latest roundup of Kickstarter Hot Picks, we mine asteroids, compete for the title of Best Suburb by building the best neighborhood, and design a new city zoo.

Let’s take a look at these hot Kickstarter campaigns…

Dark Side of the Mine

Dark Side of the Mine is Flying Lemur Game Studio’s second Kickstarter campaign. Mining an asteroid is a dangerous, highly-competitive business. Can you navigate your mining bots to the most lucrative areas?
Dark Side of the Mine
Dark Side of the Mine
The world’s ore supply has been depleted. Mining companies have turned to sending remote-controlled bots to nearby asteroids in order to obtain ores and metals needed to keep societies running. Copper, iron, uranium, gold; all are in abundance on these star travelers. And the people of earth are paying a pretty penny for each ounce.

You are assigned by your company to mine the most ore, no matter what it takes. Locate the most abundant vein and get to it before the competition does. But be careful. Greediness can lead to disaster. If you are caught in the shadows, you lose communication and mining the ore becomes impossible. All you can do then is wait until the sun comes up, restore communications, then try to catch up.

Do you have what it takes to guide your mining bots to the largest deposits, keep them moving ahead of the setting sun, and protect them from ending up on the Dark Side of the Mine?

How to Play

Players issue orders to their robots, which move along the asteroid’s surface and earn points by mining locations. As the players remain in orbit on the mothership, part of the asteroid is obscured from view. A signal cannot be sent to the dark side of the asteroid, and any robot caught there on a player’s turn will power down and wait until communications can be restored. When the asteroid deck is depleted and all players have taken an equal number of turns, the game ends. The player with the most points is declared the winner.

Over generations and generations, the ancient woodland of Børe prospered and grew. The spirit of the world lifted the animals to new heights, bestowing great gifts upon them. The Foxen race grew proud and true. That is, until the Guardians rose. No one quite knows why they came, but these are not the kind, life-giving Guardians of spiritual legend. These are darker, more ferocious versions, and now they’re wreaking havoc in the realm.
