King Kong vs. Godzilla Movie Planned at Legendary Pictures

Godzilla vs King KongHear that stomping off in the distance? It’s King Kong and Godzilla gearing up for one epic battle! Legendary Pictures, the company that made 2014’s Godzilla reboot with a King Kong reboot filming soon, is negotiating to get the two monsters in the same movie.

Multiple sources are referencing the Marvel and DC shared universes when talking about the new potential King Kong and Godzilla movie, which implies a line-up of Godzilla, King Kong, and Godzilla meets King Kong. And if you look at what Legendary has in store, that might just hold up.

First to be released – though not until 2017 – will be Kong: Skull Island. This prequel/origin story for King Kong features a team of explorers as they make their way through the dangerous Skull Island, seen in previous movies, including 2005’s King Kong, as King Kong’s home. Unlike the earlier King Kong, however, Kong: Skull Island will shift the ape’s timeline to the 1970s.

Set to star are Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston with Max Borenstein and John Gatins co-writing the script. Borenstein previously wrote 2014’s Godzilla and is currently working on the script for its sequel. That sequel, for which director Gareth Edwards will also return, is scheduled for release in June 2018.

It’s not until after both of those movies are released that King Kong vs. Godzilla would see the light of day, which means the movie is a long way off. But it will probably happen. After all, there’s precedent for a King Kong and Godzilla face-off in the 1962 Japanese movie King Kong vs. Godzilla.

If Legendary goes with the same title, the movie will remind me more of something in the same vein as the much reviled match-ups, Freddy vs. Jason and AVP: Alien vs. Predator. But with any luck, the King Kong and Godzilla movie will be better than those two.
