After teasing us with guest appearances by Veronica Mars-alums including Percy Daggs III (Wallace), Ryan Hansen (Dick) and Daran Norris (Cliff), the Rob Thomas-helmed iZombie is finally pulling out all the stops. That’s right: Veronica Mars herself is guest-starring. But the catch is that we’ll only get to hear her voice.
Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell has had plenty of voiceover experience because she provided the Veronica Mars and Gossip Girl voiceovers as well as lending her voice to Anna in Frozen, and while it’s a little bit of a bummer we won’t get to see Bell, her voice cameo spot does complete iZombie’s many Veronica Mars references. It might even be as good as Liv saying, “A long time ago, we used to be friends” in direct reference to the Veronica Mars theme song.
How iZombie will work Bell’s cameo into the show is being kept under wraps. Normally, iZombie star Rose McIver provides the narration for each episode, and it seems unlikely that that would change. However, we do know what Bell’s episode, titled “Fifty Shades of Grey Matter,” will be about. The episode will see Liv eating the brain of a poisoned librarian who also secretly wrote erotic fiction, so it’s possible Bell’s voiceover will fit in via the fiction element.
This good news for iZombie fans comes only a month after the show got six episodes officially added to its second season for a total of 19. But don’t expect the extra episodes to change anything about the show. Even though Clive essentially fired Liv as a police consultant in iZombie’s midseason finale, the show’s return episode, “Method Head,” will still have the two team up to solve a case.
Although it’s getting increasingly obvious that Clive knows something is strange about his psychic partner, Rob Thomas says he’s not going to find out she’s a zombie for a while. After the midseason finale, Thomas told E! News, “It’s the genie you cannot put back in the bottle. Once Clive knows, he knows, and we can never play those fun beats of Clive not knowing again.”
Regardless of concerns over Clive’s detective skills if he can’t figure out his partner’s a zombie, iZombie has been killing it – not literally – in its second season, even more so than in its freshman run. Tension is building on all the show’s characters with a zombie cure out of reach, Major forced into kidnapping zombies, and Liv and Major getting back together then breaking up yet again. Kristen Bell’s voice cameo is just icing on an already well-baked cake.
iZombie will return to the CW with new episodes on Jan. 12. Look for Bell’s episode to air a couple weeks after that on Jan. 26.
