Alice Falls Into Gotham’s Wonderland
On Tuesday, the producers of Gotham announced that Alice, the object of the Mad Hatter’s (Benedict Samuel) desire, has been cast, Variety reports. Mexican actress Naian Gonzalez Norvind has gained the role, which previously has been described as “[Hatter]’s sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago.” According to Variety, Alice Tetch, who will first appear in the third episode of the upcoming season, was born with an ability she cannot control. She has fled to Gotham, with her brother Jervis, a gifted hypnotist and Lewis Carroll enthusiast, in pursuit. He considers her ability a gift while she considers it to be a curse, and he will stop at nothing at using that power for his own gains (and judging by his decorations, he has more than a few screws loose.)

Jervis Tetch, aka the Mad Hatter, has been a major villain for Batman since 1948. Usually portrayed as a hypnotist and technological genius with a passion/obsession with Lewis Carroll’s Alice stories, the Hatter has been a mass murdering lunatic, a devious plotter, and even a member of villains group the Secret Six. One of Arkham’s more disturbing inmates, Tetch usually terrorizes Gotham in pursuit of his Alice, the target changing based on his whims. His crimes usually have motifs related to the Wonderland tales, as well as mind control hats. He has also been portrayed as vengeful (killing a sports team after they tormented his landlady’s daughter), comical (mainly in the silver age), or even as a deranged stalker (in Batman: The Animated Series, Jervis was trying to impress a coworker who rejected him). One of Batman’s creepiest villains as well, he was portrayed wonderfully by Peter MacNicol in the Arkham games and the late Roddy McDowell in Batman: The Animated Series.
Gotham returns Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
