The mystery man himself, the King Beyond the Wall has been cast for Game of Thrones Season 3. As a huge fan of the show, I will confess that I am only half-way through A Clash of Kings. So even at the time of this article, I have no idea who Mance Rayder is, beyond his mention in the books. It was always my theory that Mance was the long-lost Benjen Stark, brother of the recently headless Ned Stark.
Today I found out that my theory was baseless and more to the point, wrong. Mance Rayder isn’t Benjen Stark or anyone else I might have speculated him to be. HBO announced today that they have cast veteran HBO series actor Ciarán Hinds.
Hinds played Julius Caesar for two seasons in the HBO series Rome. He has also had roles in many other films like The Sum of All Fears, Munich, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, John Carter and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.
For those unfamiliar with Mance Rayder or Game of Thrones, he was a member of the Night’s Watch who betrayed his oath to side with the wildlings north of The Wall and take up arms against his brothers. He unites the wildling clans who make him their king. Rayder then leads the wildling armies against the Night’s Watch.
Season 3 of Game of Thrones premieres March 31, 2013 on HBO.
