Cobie Smulders has obviously hit the nail on the head when it comes to playing Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria Hill in Marvel’s The Avengers last summer because it looks as if she is pegged to play the role for quite some time. I guess it pays off to actually work and not play Galaga on the helicarrier.
Hill has already made an appearance in the pilot episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and is set and will be gracing our eye holes once again in next summer in Captain America: the Winter Soldier. And her continued appearance in the Marvel cinematic universe only makes sense. S.H.I.E.L.D. is now the common thread that holds the Marvel live action universe together. As much as I would love to see Samuel L. Jackson in all of the Marvel movies, and any time I turn on my TV for that matter, Director Fury can’t micromanage S.H.I.E.L.D. and keep a constant eye on all of its super powered members.
This is where the Deputy Director comes in. Smulders was a bit cagey about what the extent of her role will be in Avenger: Age of Ultron or if she would even be in the movie at all, but later admitted that Hill will be making an appearance in the movie due out in the summer of 2015.
It is nice to see that even though Marvel is introducing many new characters to the Marvel cinematic universe, they are also retaining characters that we have seen many times over the last few years. While the ranks are growing rapidly, characters like Hill help to foster a feeling that there is some structure and overall framework in place to keep the super powered folks in line. The more this universe expands the more important that framework will be.
