Hot on the heels of Tom Holland being cast as the new Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Variety has revealed that My Cousin Vinny and The Wrestler star Marisa Tomei has been cast as Aunt May. The actress will join Rosemary Harris and Sally Fields by portraying the woman who raised Peter after his parents died. At 50, Tomei will be the youngest actress to have played the part.
What’s interesting is, unlike with Harris and Fields, Marvel and Sony seem to be leaning more towards the Ultimate version of the character rather than her more famous Earth-616 version. That version of May isn’t a frail older woman with constant illnesses but an outgoing, active middle aged woman who is often busy with hobbies out of the house (making things convenient for when Peter needs to sneak out.)
Tomei is famous for her role in My Cousin Vinny, but in recent years has been in dramatic roles such as The Wrestler or in romantic comedies such as Crazy Stupid Love. She will next be seen in the film Trainwreck.
The casting has not been officially announced by Marvel, and at the time of this writing, neither Marvel nor Sony has issued a statement.
It’s also likely that, unlike Holland’s likely cameo in Civil War, we won’t see Tomei as Aunt May until the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s reboot of the Spider-Man
franchise on July 28, 2017.
Word of the Nerd will have more on this story as it develops.
