Marvel Announced the Director of The Eternals – Chloe Zhao
Chloe Zhao is stepping up to the plate after earning serious credentials at Sundance Film Festival with her film The Rider. Now, she’s in the big leagues with Marvel and is all set to direct The Eternals.
Matthew and Ryan Firpo are writing the script for The Eternals. Marvel president Kevin Feige will produce the film.
Who is Chloe Zhao?
Chloe Zhao is a Chinese director, writer, and producer. She first directed a short film called Daughters. It premiered at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in 2010. Her first feature film, Songs My Brothers Taught Me, debuted in 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival.
Zhao’s film, The Rider, released in 2017, received some of the best reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. It was even nominated for an Indie Spirit Award for best film and best director. Because of that, executives from all studios have been looking to hire her for upcoming projects. Her meeting with Marvel went so well, the studio pushed to book her quickly out of fear she might find something else before they could make her an offer.
WME and Lichter Grossman Nichols Adler & Feldman represent Zhao. She studied filmmaking at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
Where Will This Belong in the MCU?
Jack Kirby created The Eternals in 1976. It takes place millions of years ago with beings called Celestials. The Celestials are god-like creatures who genetically experimented on humans, and accidentally created evil beings called Deviants. The two groups fight for dominance over the planet and to prove who is the ultimate, superior race.
The studio execs at Marvel feel this is the perfect transition into the next phase of films. They released the Captain Marvel trailer recently and received copious amounts of positive feedback for what Marvel has in store for its next phase.
