So, after the mainstream success of the solo and team movies, the world now knows that you don’t mess with the Avengers. Many have tried, many have failed. Whether it be Kang, or Ultron, or the Masters of Evil the results are consistent. No matter the plot, Kree-Skrull War, Avengers Disassembled, or Secret Invasion the Avengers find a way. Someone yells “Avengers Assemble” (except in the movie…) and the bad guys get free trips to prison via the local hospital.
What happens when those same Avengers are off in space heading off a malevolent race sent to destroy Earth by none other than Thanos himself? Could this be just the distraction the Mad Titan needs to finish off the Earth once and for all? Who is left behind to protect the Earth? The Fantastic Four? Most of them are Avengers… The X-Men? Nope, many of them are Avengers members too. How about the race that is even more misunderstood, mistrusted, and feared by the planet at large, than mutants. How about a race so feared that they choose to live on the Moon. Yes, I’m talking about the Inhumans!
The Inhumans are another creation of the mega-team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, appearing first in Fantastic Four #45 (1965). Through the years they have had their hands full with internal squabbles and attempts to corrupt or steal the Terrigen Mists that enhance their powers. What would cause them to return to Earth let alone defend the planet and people who have so often proven unworthy? Jonathan Hickman and his trio of artists Jim Cheung (Scion, Young Avengers), Jerome Opena (Uncanny X-Force, Avengers vs X-men) , and Dustin Weaver (Avengers) are revealing that secret starting this August.
You did get a tease if you made it to your local comic shop on May 5th for Free Comic Book Day. I did, and I was intrigued. The minions of Thanos are in search of objects of power. A conquered and hopeless society gives its last shred of dignity in the form of tribute. Assassins are among the unsuspecting Avengers, X-Men, and S.H.I.E.L.D. on Earth. All of the pieces are in place, Thanos smiles. This can’t be good…hurry someone yell “Avengers Assemble”!
“The Biggest Heroes. The Biggest Threats. The Biggest Sacrifices. This is Marvel’s Infinity.” This is the promise made in the promotional materials. I have seen enough of these events to know that nothing is guaranteed. Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief at Marvel stated, “Events stories simply don’t come bigger than Infinity.” He went on to claim that the creative team, “will deliver an epic tale that covers all corners of the Marvel Universe and narrows the gap between Earth and the cosmos like never before. It’s called the ‘Marvel Universe‘ for a reason.” Hickman is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers because of his over-the-top, nothing is off-limits, style. He actually revived the long dead New Universe from the 1980s in the pages of the current Avengers (Vol 5) series, by bringing Nightmask and Starbrand to the Marvel Universe. The scribe said, of the event, “I’m very excited about Infinity for a number of reasons. First, I think it’s wonderful that the story is coming organically out of what’s been going on during Marvel NOW!. Second, for me personally, Infinity is the first big step in a series of big steps that make up the long-term plans for the Avengers books I have the privilege of writing. It should be a lot of fun.” I may be biased. I have been an avid Avengers reader for more years than I care to admit. This series may not focus on the Avengers, but it certainly will affect their future, and that of the Marvel Universe. August can’t come soon enough for me!
