Should Marvel Make a Squirrel Girl Movie?

In recent years, Marvel Studios has run into trouble by largely ignoring its female fan base. The outcry for a Black Widow movie or toys became so great that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige finally announced a Black Widow movie could be in the works – but not until after 2019.

With Marvel Studios looking to correct the major error of focusing almost exclusively on male heroes in its movie universe, there are plenty of go-to characters, including Captain Marvel who will get her own movie in 2018. But one hero has been getting a lot of buzz lately: Squirrel Girl. Should Marvel heed that cry and give the heroine her own movie?

What Could the Squirrel Girl Cast and Crew Look Like?

Over a year ago, Guardians of the Galaxy director and co-writer James Gunn professed his love for Squirrel Girl during a Facebook Q&A. He wrote of the hero, “I love her so much. I’d love to do a Squirrel Girl movie.” The guy who made us all care about the relationship between a raccoon and a tree seems like he could be a good choice for the unusually-powered heroine.

Plus, Gunn has shown through his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and other movies like Super and Slither that he has a strong but strange sense of humor, which would fit well with the lighthearted tone of the heroine’s comic adventures.

Of course, it would be even better if Marvel were to get a female director and writer for a Squirrel Girl movie, much like they’ve done for Captain Marvel. But because the heroine isn’t well-known to the average Joe, she might need someone with clout like Gunn to stick up for her and get the movie made.

In any case, Marvel has a good choice for Squirrel Girl already interested in the role. Actress Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) recently indicated she’d like to play the heroine. She said, “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!”

With her comedic chops, Kendrick could certainly be a front-runner in the role. But she’s also 30 years old, and Squirrel Girl is typically portrayed as a teenager. Of course, age doesn’t necessarily rule Kendrick out, but do we really want another Spider-Man situation?

Will We Get a Squirrel Girl Movie?

Regardless of casting, Squirrel Girl has certainly proven popular among Marvel Comics fans, thanks to The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and appearances in New Avengers and the Ultimate Spider-Man TV show. Alongside this interest from the movie community, the heroine looks like the perfect character to bring to the big screen.

But with Marvel’s movie schedule through 2019 already booked and only one female-led movie in sight, it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing a Squirrel Girl movie any time soon. But considering there’s so much interest in seeing one, maybe Marvel will listen at some point in the future. Hey, we can hope.
