Marvel officially released the first full-length Jessica Jones trailer this morning. The much-anticipated trailer was preceded by a few teasers and a motion poster, much like the initial build-up hype for Daredevil. The series is the second in a series of four planned Netflix solo Marvel series that will culminate in the superhero team-up miniseries, The Defenders.
Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter as the titular hero, working as a private eye and trying to forget about a traumatic past. Also starring in the show are Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Carrie-Ann Moss as Jeryn Hogarth, Rachel Taylor as Trish Walker, and David Tennant as Kilgrave, also known as the Purple Man.
Perhaps the most exciting part about this trailer is the creepiness of the villain, Kilgrave. Marvel has had something of a spotty history with villains in its cinematic universe. They have had excellent villains, like Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston), Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger (played by Hugo Weaving), and most recently Kingpin in Daredevil (played by Vincent D’Onofrio), but the MCU could definitely use more convincing villains — others like Ivan Vanko in Iron Man 2 (played by Mickey Rourke), Yellowjacket in Ant-Man (played by Corey Stoll), and Malekith in Thor: The Dark World (played by Christopher Eccleston) ended up flat and uninspired.
Perhaps the longer format of Netflix is conducive to more developed villains, as we saw with Kingpin in Daredevil. With Jessica Jones, we will see the introduction of Kilgrave, a murderous psychopath who can control minds. This first trailer certainly does an excellent job of establishing Kilgrave as a creepy and deeply disturbing villain with complex motivations.
Interestingly enough, Tennant will be the second actor who has previously played the Doctor on BBC’s Doctor Who to play a villain in the MCU. Hopefully his run as Kilgrave will be more memorable than Christopher Eccleston’s turn as Malekith.
The entire 13-episode first season of Jessica Jones will arrive on Netflix on November 20th.
