Last week, Entertainment Weekly revealed that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has been officially renewed for a second season, which will premiere in 2017. The timing seems to suggest that Marvel wants the second season of the show to coincide with the swell in popularity the franchise will see with the release of the second Guardians of the Galaxy film, which is set to premiere on May 5th, 2017.
The second season will follow the Guardians as they team up with the Avengers and face off against the High Evolutionary, a villain who is no stranger to comic books or animated television shows. They will find an ancient weapon with mysterious power, which is pretty par for the course when it comes to Guardians of the Galaxy. A team up and tie-in with the popular cast of the popular Avengers Assemble animated show could be just what Guardians needs to give it some new life.
The first season of Guardians on Disney XD so far has been mediocre at best, but Marvel Television has demonstrated that they are capable of creating excellent animated shows, so I remain hopeful that the show will improve. Like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., perhaps Guardians just needs one okay-ish season to get the kinks out. Maybe season two will actually live up to the hype.
The introduction of The High Evolutionary could be really cool, as long as the show takes the time to make him a complex and interesting villain. If they are not careful, The High Evolutionary could end up being just another cookie-cutter, mustache twirling evil villain that the audience has no investment in. Here’s hoping that the showrunners of Guardians learn from their mistakes, and start writing characters that are engaging and empathetic.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy airs Saturday nights at 9:30/8:30c on Disney XD. Season two is expected to arrive in 2017.
