Mayweather vs McGregor: The Comic Book Event of the Summer!

Mayweather vs McGregor

Mayweather vs McGregor The Comic Book Event of the SummerUnless you have been living under a rock for the past few months you at least know in passing about possibly one of, if not the biggest events in combat sports or in all of sports history coming up on August 26. I am of course talking about the highly controversial boxing match between one of the greatest boxers of all time Floyd “Money” Mayweather (49-0 boxing record) and “The “Notorious” Conor McGregor (0-0 boxing record, 21-3 MMA record). For those of you who may not know I will break it down simply why this is such a monumental/controversial event. First of all it is right there in the records Floyd is an undefeated professional boxer and that is just his professional record (he has an 84-8 amateur record and also holds an Olympic Bronze medal), Conor, on the other hand, has never had a professional boxing match only fighting as a youth in boxing leagues; he is a superb Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitor and is the first person in the UFC to hold two championship belts in two weight classes simultaneously, so his first professional boxing match will be against an all-time great in the sport. Floyd is also coming off a two-year retirement from the sport, with motivation seemingly being in the amount of money he will make. Without going into much more detail than that most people see this for what it is a money grab for both fighters, Floyd is going to make somewhere between 300-400 million and Conor anywhere from 75-100 million for this fight, the pay-preview rate will be set at $99.

Superman vs Muhammed AliDoes Mayweather vs McGregor not totally feel like a big super-hero event from DC or Marvel? I mean you have two Titans clashing, hype all over the media landscape, a thing that is going to sell with a very high price tag and fans complaining about it all along, but still are going to buy it! Now I am not comparing either fighter to a super-hero, I am especially not comparing Mayweather the guy who did jail time for domestic violence to any kind of hero. So the question arises who do you root for? Neither guy is what you would call “humble” or has that enduring quality to fans to get behind, but that is not what got either one of them to the top. Conor made a meteoric rise through the MMA ranks with his gift of gab. He can smack talk with the best of them and it leads to his rise to fame and fortune and made this fight possible. Floyd was never a big money drawer until he built up his Floyd “Money” Mayweather persona that had people tuning in droves to see the possibility of someone shutting him up. If Conor McGregor does win he may become the biggest combat sports star in history even eclipsing Ali (could you imagine this iconic cover with McGregor on it?) So we have two guys that have their respective fans, but are largely tuned into to see them get shut down, so who are we to root for?

If you are a boxing purest well then in the Mayweather vs McGregor fight I am guessing you have to root for Floyd by default, you really do not want some guy with no experience in your sport just to waltz in and defeat one of your greatest athletes ever. In comic book terms, I guess that would be like if you really like Dr. Doom yeah he is not a good guy, but you really like him and people are like yeah but Squirrel Girl totally owned him. Dr. Doom fans are fine with heavy hitters like the Fantastic Four or The Avengers taking Doom down, but that Squirrel Girl loss has to be hard to cope with. Squirrel Girl fans are pumped like she just hopped up and took him down and she had never faced anybody at his level before. In that case, if you are not a boxing purest you have to kind of root for Conor McGregor. Yeah he does annoying stuff, like brag about how much money he has, wears fur coats with no shirt, but his smack talk is genuinely funny and he is a huge underdog for this fight and it is hard not to root for the underdog.

That is another aspect that makes this feel like a big event comic book. McGregor is a big underdog going against unsurmountable odds. Big super hero events are usually based around our heroes facing the unbeatable but still trying anyway. To the MMA fan or if you just really dislike Floyd this is like Captain America standing up to Thanos in The Infinity Gauntlet (well except for the whole McGregor is still going to make a butt load of cash win or lose and the Universe itself is not at stake). In the story line, you know Cap does not have a chance against Thanos wielding his god like powers but he still comes forward and throws a punch anyway, that is what McGregor brings to the table his undying belief in his self. He is noted saying he will knock out Floyd in 4 rounds a man that has never lost a professional boxing match in 49 fights Conor thinks he can still take him out and nobody believes it except Conor and he believes it with his whole heart. While Conor has honed his punching, kicking, elbow, knees, taken downs and submissions over the years, Floyd has spent his life time just punching and this is a boxing match with only punches. As the great Bruce Lee said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times”.

Mayweather vs McGregor The Comic Book Event of the Summer

More than likely this fight will be like most big event comics. A big build up before it is released and then when it happens it is a bit of a letdown. That is more than likely how the fight will go, Mayweather will dance around Conor and embarrass him for 12 rounds or knock him out early, fans will say I told you so and complain about having to pay such a high price for such a lackluster event, but there still is that chance that something big or surprising does happen! That this is the one that will change everything forever! You don’t want to be the person that misses out on that, do you? And that is the thing that catches us as fight fans and comic book fans, that is what keeps us coming back for more, that one possibility.
