My name is Megan aka Megancosslay, and I’ve been cosplaying for 2 years. I’m self-taught and love my craft. I have to rebuild my Instagram after severe harassment which deleted my old account formerly Megancosplays. I’m 20 years old and am just your typical broke college student with a unique hobby!
How did you first get into cosplay?
I saw the movies and fell in love with the characters and was into acting.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
For fun mostly.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them, or a hybrid?
Commission and hybrid.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
A few hours or days.
What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?
Black Cat or Suicide Squad Harley.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
Making friends and getting to be the character and making kids days. Bad is people lie about you and use you and are backstabbing and isn’t always a supportive community.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
Female Mandalorian and classic Harley
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
When politics and personal beliefs come into play.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
DC and Marvel.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
Cons and photoshoots.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Thrifting items and Etsy.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Self-consciousness and growing tougher skin
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Always watch your back and have a backup plan and be prepared.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
If at first you don’t succeed try try again and we are our own worst enemy.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It goes through some rough patches.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
More of Black Cat and Harley and Disney princesses.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Try to get the cheapest items possible.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Another form of expression and hobby.
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
What is your favorite con to attend?
Fanexpo Boston and some down south.
Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?
There are too many.
Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?
What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?
Always ask! 99% of the time we’ll say yes to pictures do not take pictures sneakily and without asking or giving credit and do not grab us because cosplay IS NOT CONSENT!
What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?
I go through a lot.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Too stressful or loose interest.
