My beloved Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been on a casting frenzy since San Diego Comic-Con! Our own Jessa Searles mentioned in an earlier article that Lucy Lawless would be joining the cast in a guest role. There was also more casting information given on Lawless will be playing Agent Isabel Hartley. Hartley is known for the one issue that she showed up in so that the writers could confirm that Victoria Hand was, in fact, a lesbian. She also broke up with Victoria in the same issue, and it was pretty sad, actually. Hopefully, Hartley will play a bigger role in the show, and there has been speculation that her appearance also spells the resurrection of one Victoria Hand, though that has yet to be confirmed. Hopefully, a show built on the premise of resurrection will give viewers more than just post-humous queer confirmation.
Kyle MacLachlan was cast earlier this month as Skye’s father, last seen sitting in a warehouse covered in blood. It was unclear if it was his blood or someone else’s, but what was clear is that he really needs to hire someone to decorate his lair. The decorator has yet to be cast. Whether or not MacLahlan will be playing an Inhuman (possibly Black Bolt) or an alien (possibly Mar-Vel) has not yet been determined. It is also unclear how Phil Coulson, Skye’s surrogate father figure, will react to her birth father coming out of the woodwork, but fans are hoping for a Dad-Off that will make the history books.
It has yet to be announced how alien dad feels about cups of coffee.
Yesterday morning, the Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Adrianne Palicki will be joining the show as Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, also known as Mockingbird. The appearance of Morse was hinted at in a video released during the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel at San Diego Comic-Con, but the character had not been officially cast until yesterday. The Reporter also notes that she will be appearing in the fifth episode of season 2 “with the potential to return.” Many will note that Mockingbird is also the ex-wife of Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, and that her appearance might spell a cameo of America’s sixth favorite and handsomest Avenger.
Hawkeye. Just clarifying that the Avenger in that statement is Hawkeye.
Palicki was cast in 2011 to play Wonder Woman in the NBC pilot, which never made it to distribution. She is an avid collector and reader of comics, and fans have already been responding positively not only to her casting, but to Mockingbird coming into the MCU. If Clint Barton doesn’t show, there is also a possibility that she could bring along Kate Bishop for the ride, as Morse has mentored Bishop many times in the comics, usually in lieu of Clint Barton. The appearance of Kate Bishop, however, is purely fan-wishing and speculation.
In another earlier Word of the Nerd article, additional casting for season 2 is as follows: “MI6 and STRIKE agent, Lance Hunter, to be played by Nick Blood; Daniel Whitehall, a.k.a. Kraken, depicted by Reed Diamond.”
(My beloved) Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC on September 23rd at 9pm, EST.
Bringing out the inner nerd in everyone!
