About Momo Naberrie

My name is Momo Naberrie, I’m 31 y.o. and I´m an illustrator based in Mexico! I´m a big fan of Star Wars (My favorite character as my cosplay name says is the beautiful Padme Amidala Naberrie) among my hobbies, I love to travel and learn about the different cultures that exist in the world!

Momo Naberrie - Cosplayer Spotlight

How did you first get into cosplay?

It could be sound crazy but since I was a child I´ve loved to dress like a character from a movie or a cartoon! I always asked my parents made my b-day celebrations costume parties!!! talking about my life as an adult I retake cosplay about 3 years ago

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

I do cosplay for love !!! but of course if one the opportunity appears in front of me to do it in a professional way well…where do I need to sign? hehe, what could be better than work in something you do for fun!!!

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them, or a hybrid?

I prefer to do them from scratch !! a lot of factors interfere with that: I love to learn new skills or improve the ones I already have! Also, I consider myself so perfectionist that I work a lot in the mini little details to get the result as similar as possible to the original suit, but at moment I need to accept I work in a hybrid way! Fortunately, my mother in law helps me a lot in making my costumes (she is a superstar when we talk about sewing)

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

It really depends but I always want to do the hardest ones hahaha so if we talk about how much time I spent in the easiest one, I spent 3 months (Padme Amidala Packing gown from Star Wars Episode II)

* What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?

Well, I need to say Queen Amidala´s Red throne gown!!!! <3 <3 <3

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

I’m so lucky because at moment I have not had a bad experience, the most memorable moment was one day I cosplayed as a Jedi and 2 little boys come to me really excited because they were meeting a Jedi (they had with them a notebook and a pen) so they asked me if I could give them an autograph!!!! I was like OMG!!!!! of course, I signed their notebook whit the memorable phrase: May the force be with you!!! at that moment I was more excited than them 😛

How do you feel about group cosplays?

At the moment I have not participated in one yet!!! but sounds really cool and I would love to participate in one!!! it makes more interesting all the dynamic in a Con!!

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

I’m working in 2: – Queen Amidala´s Parade gown (Star Wars ep. I) – Queen Amidala´s Black Decoy gown (Star Wars ep. I)

What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

Sadly, I think that there are still people who believe that because you do not have certain aspects of the character to characterize (skin color, physical structure, etc.) they take away the credit for how well worked the costume and characterization can be.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

I like Strong and tough women!!! About the genre, I’m a big fan of Star Wars! or Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead!) a Mexican Holiday!

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

Well, I enjoy a lot doing all the research about the costume I wanna do! I like to learn all the history behind the costume (what was the main inspiration, type of fabrics, creation process, etc.) and when finally I can use it in a Con (that moment when the suit comes to life and I can become the character)

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

At the moment I usually buy some items online and others at local accessories stores, fabrics among others, but I do not have a special place for that!

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

I think I have been my biggest obstacle, I not an extrovert person so my insecurities sometimes play with me in a lot of ways, that at the end I ending telling me that I do not look good or my costume it does not look good (that kind of self-sabotage)

* Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

Yeah of course!!! I think I have learned a lot of life lessons!! but one of the most important is that if I propose something I can achieve it I just need to study or ask and it is very likely in the end to find the solution and gain a new skill

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Be patient the result will be worth it (in some points of the construction of the cosplay is very likely some questions or frustrations come to the light but all of these efforts at the end really worth it !!!) never give up!

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

Thanks to social media, I think today the community has become bigger and you can be in touch with cosplayers from all around the world, which allows feedback to improve costumes or answer questions in an easier way!

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Wow, this is a tough question (i would love to do all the Queen Amidala´s wardrobe) but if I only need to pick one would be the Queen Amidala´s Senate gown from Episode I.

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

I try to! I like to organize that kind of thing because I work better so it’s necessary to have in mind a budget! I make a list to know in which things can I give and look for them at a lower price and in which I cannot do it so as not to compromise their quality

What does cosplay mean to you?

Cosplay is my passion!! is a really creative and artistic way I can express myself

How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?

Bigger, more inclusive, with new challenges to carry out

What is your favorite con to attend?

Well here in Mexico “La Conque” but my biggest dream is to attend to Star Wars Celebration

* Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?

Uffff right now you can find a lot of girl power!!!! Among the cosplayers who inspire me are Bekahsoka, Kelldar, Jedimanda.

Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?

Not at the moment! I am very new to making my work known.

What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?

It is important to be respectful! If you want a picture always ask properly for it! And please take care in where you place your hands! Always be respectful!

What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?

If they want to solve some doubts about my work process they can be sure I’m happy to answer any of them!!

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

NOO! I can’t imagine it could exist something that makes me stop cosplaying!
