About MsAlyona Cosplay
I am 29, oil & gas project manager from Moscow, also one of the founders and author of MetalGossip website. I like travelling, reading, collecting vinyls and playing guitar. And I enjoy baking so come to my dark side as I will always have cookies for you 🙂
How did you first get into cosplay?
My friend went to a huge Russian con as a visitor, and later she came to me and said that we shall go to that con together next time. And as we had a couple of beers during this conversation we decided that we will make some fun and will go there in costumes. I made a costume and she didn’t xD
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I am doing that just for fun. I am an oil & gas project manager, but I need something to distract myself from serious business, so I do cosplay.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
Well, I try to do as much as can by myself, but as I don’t have enough time resources I order some parts of my costumes from talented crafters.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
A lot of time actually. I make 1 cosplay per year. I am that slow xD
What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?
My next one, which is in progress right now. I have never done armor before so this is gonna be epic.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
Hela was my first costume that I took on the cons, so I was quite a newbie in cosplay and I was quite surprised when I was invited to participate in some Disney Russia’s Marvel-related activities and was interviewed by them.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I think that it’s a great chance for the new people in cosplay to get into the community and have support in creating costumes and performances. It can be tough when you don’t have experience in sewing, crafting, acting, and modeling. And it’s also fun to spend time with your friends, share experiences and learn new things!
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
It’s Necromancer from Diablo III
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
Toxic community. I see huge battles on the internet about what true cosplayer shall do (not to buy costume/ not to do fanservice photoshoots and so on) every time when I surf cosplay communities. I just think that we shall be more supportive of each other and have fun. Life is too short, you don’t want to waste your time on hate.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I like strong female characters with a certain charisma and devilish personality traits.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
My most favourite part is seeing the final result 🙂
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I try different stores and don’t have a favourite one right now
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
People believe that cosplay is for kids, not for grown-ups. I tried to convince some of my opponents but gave up. I simply do what I like and don’t care what others think.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
The most important lesson is that you shall never listen to anyone.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Don’t be afraid to try something new, just do it 🙂
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
Interational community changed a lot I shall say. It became more welcoming, respectful and kind. Believe me, I have a local community in my country to compare with.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Artemisia in 300 Rise of an Empire
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
What does cosplay mean to you?
Perfect hobby for escapists and dreamers like me
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
Best place to create and share new works.
What is your favorite con to attend?
Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?
I prefer to not have any role model. I found inspiration in themes which I select for my cosplays. I don’t want to copy the works of others.
Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?
I don’t think so 🙂 There are many cosplayers that are more talented and creative and who do cosplay professionally.
What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?
Just start with hello and never touch cosplayer without asking permission.
What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?
I am a real metalhead
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
