The Rookie Star Nathan Fillion Is on Board for DC’s The Suicide Squad
Deadline reports that Nathan Fillion, currently starring on ABC’s The Rookie, is coming to DC via James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad. His exact role is still under wraps. He joins a rather star-studded cast. It includes Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag). Other new cast members include Idris Elba, David Dastmalchain (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchoir (Ratcatcher), Flula Borg, and Steve Agee (King Shark).
James Gunn is serving as scriptwriter and director for The Suicide Squad. Chuck Roven and Peter Safran are producing. Nik Korda is the executive producer. Production is set to begin September 23.
Nathan Fillion Is Actually No Rookie
Nathan Fillion has worked with Gunn a few times in the past. Fillion provided the voice of a monstrous inmate for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which Gunn directed. In Gunn’s 2006 horror-comedy Slither, Fillion played Bill Pardy. For Gunn’s 2010 film Super, Fillion played the Holy Avenger.
This is also not his first time with DC. He played Green Lantern in a few animated features, such as Reign of the Superman and Justice League: Doom.
His other credits include Desperate Housewives, for which he received a SAG ensemble nomination. He received a Daytime Emmy nomination for his work in One Life to Live. Prior to his current role on The Rookie, he worked for eight seasons on Castle as mystery novelist Richard “Rick” Castle. He played smaller roles in a few series, such as Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet and A Series of Unfortunate Events. He is perhaps best known for his role on Joss Whedon’s cult science fiction series, Firefly, where he played Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds.
