I am by no means a food critic and this probably doesn’t belong on a site like Word of the Nerd, but I had an amazing experience last night while out with my family. After stopping by my LCS to pick up my comics for the week, my wife mentioned that she was hungry for a good cheeseburger. Across the street from my LCS was a place called Bang Bang Burgers. We had a friend in tow with us and never turning down a chance to try something new, we unloaded the kids and paraded inside.
At first glance none of us were sure what to make of Bang Bang Burgers, but once inside the atmosphere was relaxing and inviting. We were greeted by one of the owners Joseph Huang who got us set up with high chairs for the kids and he even showed us some children’s reading material to keep them amused. Joseph then took the time to explain the menu to us, what were the most popular items and described how nearly everything was made. I have never in my life been to a restaurant where I was treated with such an openness that Joseph and the staff at Bang Bang gave us.
Now the menu was really quite simple, with nothing too complicated. However Joseph pointed us in the right direction. I ordered the double Bang Bang Burger. It came on a fresh, homemade brioche bun from a local bakery nearby with a slice of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and a homemade pickle spear. I substituted the hand-cut fries for onion rings. While we waited for our food to come out, Joseph brought us a sample of their homemade potato chips, which were excellent. They were even nice enough to bring us another sample because my kids were enjoying them so.
When our food came out, I was again very surprised at the presentation. It was served on a wooden cutting board with a small basket for the onion rings. What I also found very pleasing was that the lettuce, tomato and onion were served on the side and not already placed on the burger…bravo. Also on the side was a small dish of their Bang Bang sauce which was a homemade Thousand Island dressing. Instead of dressing my burger with ketchup as I normally do, I used the Bang Bang sauce.
Now words cannot describe how good my burger really was, but I will try. Even though I am writing this the day after, I still cannot get over just how delicious that burger was. The bun was soft and buttery, the burger patties were juicy without soaking through the bun and were perfectly cooked how I like them. Topped with the Bang Bang sauce, it was quite honestly the best cheeseburger I have had in quite a while. The onion rings were battered in a tempura style and cooked perfectly.
I am not one to gush over food or restaurants either, but I was so impressed with Bang Bang Burgers that I did something I have never done before in my life. As we were leaving, I shook Joseph’s hand and told him what an amazingly delightful experience my family and I had. I told him it was very rare that a restaurant did everything perfect, but I had to say that they did it. Every single thing I ate that evening was delicious and cooked perfectly. Bang Bang Burgers would definitely be added to our rotation of frequently visited restaurants and I cannot wait to go there again soon. What works out so perfectly is that they are conveniently located across the street from my LCS, so I can see Wednesdays becoming even more of a treat for me. New comics and a delicious cheeseburger from Bang Bang Burgers.
So to Joseph Huang and the entire staff, I want to pass along my thanks and commend everyone there for a wonderful meal and a family friendly environment. You’ve earned my respect and more importantly you’ve earned my continued and loyal patronage.
If you live in the Charlotte, NC area or plan on visiting you need to check out Bang Bang Burgers. They are located at 2001 E. 7th Street Suite D., so if you are planning to attend HeroesCon this year, they are conveniently located across the street from Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find.
