GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY BYTE: The release of Marvel/Disney’s next blockbuster superhero movie is drawing ever closer. This time the focus is on a lesser known team from the other side of the Galaxy. These outlaws, who call themselves Guardians of the Galaxy are a bunch of misfits on their best day, but they can certainly cause problems for their enemies. In this second trailer Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) says it better than I could. Watch and enjoy. Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1st. See you there.

FLASH BYTE: If you expected the news from the upcoming The Flash series from the CW to be slow and steady, then you just don’t understand the source material. The creators of the series that spun out of the CW’s hit show Arrow is drawing on the speed-force as they approach their fall launch. The CW has released a teaser introducing you to some of the supporting characters that Barry Allen will be depending on every week. Tom Cavanagh (physicist Harrison Wells) introduces you to his S.T.A.R. Labs team which includes Cisco Ramon (played by Carlos Valdes), and Caitlin Snow (played by Danielle Panabaker), and explains how they will be integral to The Flash’s mission. In case you don’t recognize the name Cisco Ramon, you might know him better as DC Comics very own Vibe. It looks like The Flash will carry on the DC Comics/Warner Bros. tradition of including characters from around their universe that you will recognize in their television shows.

DARK HORSE BYTE: Veteran comic scribe Dan Abnett (Legion Lost, The Punisher) and artist I.N.J. Culbard (The Case of Charles Dexter Ward) will team up once again to bring you a new six issue limited series from Dark Horse Comics. The duo that brought you The New Deadwardians (Vertigo Comics) and Dark Ages (Dark Horse Comics) will bring you a new tale called Wild’s Endwhich has been described as, “a small 1930s British village focuses on locals, Clive (a dog), Peter (a mink), Fawkes (a fox) and Gilbert (a rabbit) as they do their best to survive the influx of mysterious malevolent forces from beyond the stars.” Debuting on September 10th, this should be another winner from Dark Horse Comics, Dan Abnett, and I.N.J. Culbard.

Nerd BytesSCREEN ROUND-UP: Just when the various news outlets were starting rumors about the “problems at Marvel Studios” things are all right with the world again, right? The controversy, stemmed from the recent departure of Ant-Man director Edgar Wright due to creative differences. There hasn’t been any real information as to what those differences are, but his replacement may give some clues. Director Peyton Reed (Upright Citizens Brigade, Bring it On) has his roots in comedy but it has been made clear from the beginning that Ant-Man would explore a more humorous side of the Marvel Universe. With Paul Rudd attached to play the lead (Scott Lang) and now Adam McKay, best known for the Anchorman films, signed to assist with the rewrites, its obvious that humor wins the day. Ant-Man is currently scheduled to release on July 17, 2015. More big news from Nerd BytesMarvel Studios, this time it’s about their upcoming Netflix series Daredevil. Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Full Metal Jacket) will play the arch-villain Kingpin in the upcoming series. D’Onofrio is one of my all-time favorite actors. This is great news. The sequel to the popular movie Divergent will be releasing on March 20, 2015. Insurgent, directed by Robert Schwentke will boast some new and returning cast members including Shailene Woodley, reprising her role as Beatrice Prior, as well as Miles Teller, and Theo James. Word is that the third installment, Allegiant, will release on March 16, 2016. Although he hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, it is widely accepted that Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street) will play Gambit. Some say it will be a solo feature, some say it will be in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, which was teased at the end of current blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past. Tatum himself had this to say;

“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief…He walks on the grey. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”

I like Tatum’s acting, but I’m still not sure he’s the right pick for the Cajun master-thief turned mutant hero, but I’m willing to give him a chance. Gambit is tentatively scheduled for a 2016 release, but that could change. Nerd Bytes will be there and let you know if it does.

Nerd BytesNERDITORIAL: Comic book and superhero based movies generally continue to dominate the big and small screens. Movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and X-Men: Days of Future Past have had great success recently. Shows like Arrow and  The Walking Dead continue to draw viewers with smart writing and great acting. DC Comics and parent company Warner Bros. finally had a successful movie, Man of Steel, that didn’t involve Batman. Now they are moving into high gear with planning the future of the DC Movie Universe. They have announced quite a fewNerd Bytes movies that we assumed were coming, some we doubted were coming, and a couple we had no idea about. Lets take a brief trip into the future. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is obviously next and highly anticipated. There has been some serious controversy already due to some casting choices like Ben Affleck (Batman), Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor) and possibly Jason Momoa (Aquaman). The film will release in May of 2016 and will not be the sequel to Man of Steel as originally expected. In July of 2016 Shazam will find the screen. This is one we haven’t heard much about, but if done right could have some teen appeal in a Percy Jackson way. By Christmas of 2016 The Sandman will be waiting under your tree. Jack Thorne (Skins, The Fades) will write the screenplay from Neil Gaiman’s source material, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is attached, so this one is off to a good start already. The long overdue  Justice League will finally see screens in May of 2017, and depending on some of these lead-ins it might challenge for the greatest box office performance ever. In July of Nerd Bytes2017 Wonder Woman will release marking the first feature film for a female lead in a DC Comics based movie. Flash and Green Lantern will team up around Christmas of 2017 in an unexpected announcement. This will likely be intended to rehabilitate the Green Lantern character by capitalizing on the expected popularity of Grant Gustin’s upcoming Flash television series. Finally the Warner Bros. release list shows that we will have to wait until May of 2018 for Man of Steel 2. We originally thought Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would be that sequel, but at some point DC and WB decided to make it a stand-alone lead in to Justice League instead and pushed a return to Metropolis back a couple of years. I’m pretty excited about some of these announcements and will reserve judgment until I see more information, or at least confirmation. Steven DaCorta had something to say on this subject as well. Check out his article Warner Bros., DC Movie Plans Leak; Include Wonder Woman, Shazam for his take on the information. Hang in there fans, Nerd Bytes will have all of the facts as they become available.
