GOTHAM BYTE: I know I keep raving about my expectations for NBC TV’s upcoming show about pre-Bat Gotham. I am completely unapologetic for this fact. I do have seriously high expectations for this show.
It has a great cast including Ben McKenzie (James Gordon), Sean Pertwee (Alfed Pennyworth), David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), and Jada Pinkett Smith (Fish Mooney), among others.It’s helmed by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist). If you’ve seen that show, you know this is great news.
It’s all adding up to an epic story that really has to finally be told. The one missing piece of the puzzle has been the casting of the Joker. This is a tough one due in large part to the shoes this poor actor will have to fill. Shoes worn by none other than Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and even the voice acting genius of Mark Hamill. Now don’t scream at me because I don’t have any set-in-stone news on the casting of Matt Smith (Doctor Who) or any other such revelation. All I have is a rumor that may or may not have much truth to it. That rumor is that little known actor Jon Beavers best known for playing a DJ named Twist on Nickelodeon’s The Fresh Beat Band will play a stand-up comedian on the show. I checked, he’s even credited on IMDB, not that that means much since it makes no mention of the Joker. The comedian aspect does have precedent, as Alan Moore had portrayed the Joker as a failed comedian in his critically acclaimed Batman: The Killing Joke (1988). I’m not sure what the real story is here, but if Beavers doesn’t end up playing the Clown Prince of Crime, Nerd Bytes will be there to tell you who will be Batman’s greatest villain.
MARVEL BYTE: Two huge announcements were made this week that affect iconic Marvel Comics’ characters and possibly their movie counterparts. I’m not really sure why but I’m happy to speculate. First it was announced that the weilder of Mjolnir, the mystical Uru hammer, will now be a female. Calm down ladies, this does not mean that Chris Hemsworth is having any gender reassignment procedures. I’m not even sure this will translate to the silver screen, at least not in the near future. Avengers: Age of Ultron is already under way and Hemsworth is front and center. Could this be a thinly veiled plot to compete with DC/Warner Bros. Wonder Woman? DC and Warner Bros. had better stop dragging their feet on Wonder Woman or they may find themselves in a Norse vs Greek Mythological battle royale at the box office.
The second big announcement was one that anyone who follows Captain America comics had to see coming. Recently Cap lost the super-soldier serum that had been powering him since World War II. This caused him to age 65 years and lose all of his abilities. Now instead of leading the Avengers, he will be limiting his excitement to early bird specials and bingo. The speculation started immediately as to who will be the next to don the cowl and shield. That questions was answered by Joe Quesada. Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer appeared on The Colbert Report as he has done many times, but this time he had huge news. He revealed that the next man to carry the flag, so to speak, will be Sam Wilson, formerly the Falcon. Colbert, in his normal tongue-in-cheek style, lamented;
“I don’t have to tell you that the world is falling apart under Barack Obama’s leadership. We’re losing one of our greatest leaders, Captain America. He won our hearts back in 1941 by punching Hitler in the face! Unfortunately, Cap’s days of protecting America are numbered, events in Captain America, which saw him lose the Super Soldier serum and age 65 years. Meaning his new super serum will be Ensure. With Steve Rogers brought low there’s a huge void in the Captaining of America. Who among us is prepared to step in?”
The host’s fans expressed their desire to see Colbert don the shield and uniform as the next Captain America, but Quesada quickly squelched the chanting asserting that the job is taken by Sam Wilson, but did offer some consolation to fans by telling Colbert that he could serve as the next Falcon! No word on whether Colbert will pass on the Letterman gig to strap on the wings. Nerd Bytes will keep you posted!
WALKING DEAD BYTE: AMC’s The Walking Dead is cable television’s top rated show for many reasons. It’s well written, well directed, well acted, and fearless when it comes to pushing the envelope with stories and characters.
The reason I love the show is because of what I call the “Oh, $!+” moments. Remember when Daryl got shot by Andrea? Remember when Sophia shambled out of the barn as a walker, the standoff between Rick and Shane, Carol’s walk with Lizzie, or even Rick’s brutal attack on Joe? Every one of those scenes constituted one of those moments.
It seems that Season 5 will continue the trend. Rumors are swirling that the Season premiere of The Walking Dead is so violent and disturbing that some scenes may have to be cut? How much more violent can they be than what we have seen in the past? Well, Steven Yeun (Glenn) recently said;
“I remember a couple of scenes I would look over at what was going on in the scene and I would be like, ‘What the eff? What are we doing? How is this legal? It’s grounded and real, too; it’s not like torture or gore for no reason. It’s literally, that is what would happen and we are trying to show it. It would not work on network television, let me tell you that.”
Steven isn’t the only one surprised by the brutality of the premier. Lauren Cohan (Maggie) said some of the scenes were “so disturbing” she didn’t think they’d make it onto the show. I can’t imagine what could be so disturbing after what we have already seen, but these two actors have been forefront in the brutality so if they are shocked we should be too. It’s still a long wait until October, but it sounds like, as always, it will be worth the wait!
SCREEN ROUND-UP: A Stan Lee cameo in a DC Comics/Warner Bros. movie? Not bloody likely right? Of course not. But that is not stopping Stan “The Man” from lobbying for a part in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016! At a recent convention Lee was jokingly discussing the rivalry between the comics industry’s two biggest players. He offered;
“DC could probably make a lot more money with Superman and Batman if they announced that I’d have a cameo in it! People wouldn’t believe it – they’d have to go to the theatre to see it!”
I do’t know about all of you, but I’ll be scanning the faces in the film just in case. We all know that a Stan Lee cameo won’t be necessary to get people to see this film, they had us at “Batman and Superman”.
Hellboy fans may have reason to worry about the future of the movie franchise. Director Guillermo Del Toro has always asserted that the story was intended to be a trilogy. Recently in a Reddit AMA, interview Del Toro answered questions about the topic. Unfortunately he made it clear that Hellboy 3 may be happening, but not any time soon. Del Toro might be the hardest working guy in entertainment these days. His new television series The Strain premiered this week. Feature films Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim 2 are in the planning stages. This doesn’t leave much time for a Hellboy finale right now, if ever.
“Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”
Del Toro currently has a very full plate, with The Strain premiering tonight (July 19), and other planned projects including Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim 2, and a possible adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness.
This is likely the last time you will see me reporting on the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot/remake/travesty. Kata Mara (Sue Storm) was recently interviewed by Esquire Mexico and although I wasn’t surprised by what she said, I was still appalled. When asked about her thoughts on the comics she responded;
“I’ve never been a fan of comics, I’ve never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions. The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it’s very exciting to be part of a movie like this.”
So the movie won’t be “based on any history of anything already published”. Well, except for the characters, costumes, personalities, names, villains, and the world. Josh Trank, in a Michael Bay-like move, is making it clear that again ego trumps history. No wonder Marvel is distancing itself from Fox and the Fantastic Four. The good news is that since this is not a Fantastic Four movie, I no longer have to pay attention to it.
