Nerd BytesMARVEL’S AXIS BYTE: Marvel Comics’ latest golden boy writer is Rick Remender. Remender is a fairly prolific scribe having written such notable stories as Fear Agent (Dark Horse and Image), Night Mary (IDW), and a plethora of stories at Marvel Comics including most recently  Uncanny Avengers and Captain America. This time Marvel has handed him the keys to the kingdom as lead on their upcoming Axis crossover. Recently Remender and executive editor Tom Brevoort recently spoke about the October’s event. The epic will start with The Red Supremacy featuring the Avengers and X-Men pitted up against the Red Skull. The story will continue into Inversionwhere readers will see heroes and villains reversing roles. Remender stressed that there will be no mind control nonsense here. These heroes and villains have just decided that their efforts in either direction have been fruitless and a new direction is needed. The writer assures the readers that these decisions will carry on long after the event has ended. The crossover will include such popular Avengers and X-Men as Luke Cage, Medusa, Thor, Deadpool, Sabretooth, Cyclops, Magneto and even the new Sam Wilson version of Captain America (Sam Wilson). From the cover art, it seems that En Sabah Nur, Apocalypse, may be back in the fold which makes sense given his inclusion in the upcoming Fox movie X-Men: Apocalypse. I’m not sold on this idea. I understand that this is being taken seriously at Marvel Comics and the status quo will certainly be rocked, but still it smacks of a WWE caliber heel turn. I hope I am wrong and I do think that Rick Remender, if anyone, can pull off this turn. We’ll all see in October!

THE MULTIVERSITY will be written by GRANT MORRISON with art and covers by IVAN REIS and JOE PRADO and variants by CHRIS BURNHAM, BRYAN HITCH, and even GRANT MORRISON himself, among other through the series. The first issue will be on sale on August 20th. In their solicitation, DC Comics alerted retailers heralding the arrival of the event with a lot of marketing. Morrison himself called the work, “the culmination of everything I’ve been doing since I came back to DC in 2003”. They went on to describe The Multiversity in this way;

“Join visionary writer Grant Morrison, today’s most talented artists, and a cast of unforgettable characters from 52 alternative Earths of the known DC Multiverse! Prepare to meet the Vampire League of Earth-43, the Justice Riders of Earth-18, Superdemon, Doc Fate, the super-sons of Superman and Batman, the rampaging Retaliators of Earth-8, the Atomic Knights of Justice, Dino-Cop, Sister Miracle, Lady Quark, the legion of Sivanas, the Nazi New Reichsmen of Earth-10 and the latest, greatest Super Hero of Earth-Prime: YOU!
Comprising six complete adventures – each set in a different parallel universe – plus a two-part framing story and a comprehensive guidebook to the many worlds of the Multiverse, THE MULTIVERSITY is more than just a multipart comic-book series. It’s a cosmos spanning, soul-shaking experience that puts YOU on the frontline in the Battle for All Creation against the demonic destroyers known as the Gentry!”

The DC Comics Multiverse has been tortured, abused and all but destroyed by various Crisis events in the past. Sure they brought us some great stories, some epic deaths, most of which were reversed by the launch of New 52, if not before. That same New 52 campaign also brought about the perfect starting point for a whole new Multiverse for the DC Comics pantheon and who better to create an entire multiverse of differing versions of Earth? Why Grant Morrison of course. This is actually the first story from DC Comics that I have been excited about since Earth 2 launched. Mark your calendars for August 20th. I don’t think you’re going to want to miss this event.

Nerd BytesVALIANT BYTE: John Layman, co-creator of the critically acclaimed Chew, will be taking his considerable talents to another great comic book company. This October he will make his Valiant Entertainment debut with Archer & Armstrong #25. Current creative team Fred Van Lente and Clayton Henry will complete their run with Issue 25’s lead story called “Back to the Beginning”. Layman and artist Ramon Villalobos will follow-up with an eight-page story called “Immortal Combat”. All-in-all the transitional issue will be 48-pages and will include work from others such as Ray Fawkes and Andy Kuhn, Justin Jordan and Rafer Roberts, Joey Esposito and Joe Eisma, and Donny Cates, Eliot Rahal and Khari Evans. Layman spoke of the announcement in a press release from Valiant;

Archer & Armstrong is absolutely fantastic, and I’m stoked to be part of this landmark issue. I really love the entire vibe of the book – a buddy action comedy, full of conspiracy and history, and then injected with just pure fantastic gonzo madness. I love books where you can tell the creator is having a good time, because it’s infectious. I’m recommending ‘Archer & Armstrong’ to anybody who likes fun comics. I still want to do a Quantum and Woody/Chew and a Poyo/Goat crossover. It’s just a matter of getting off my lazy ass and making it happen.”

Well, it sounds to me like Mr. Layman just took the first step toward that end. Check out Archer & Armstrong #25 on October 29th from Valiant Entertainment.

SCREEN ROUND-UP: As you already know, Netflix and Marvel Comics are teaming up for some shows about Marvel’s “street level” characters. Daredevil already in production, and others including one featuring Luke Cage will soon follow. Terry Crews, veteran actor known best for his roles in TV’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the big screen actioner The Expendables, has thrown his hat into the ring to play the street thug turned convict turned hero. Crews offered, “I’m game. There are no rules. What’s up, Marvel? I’m right here, baby. I ain’t goin’ nowhere. You know where I live!” With that statement alone I think Crews may be perfect to play Cage. Fans of television’s American Horror Story can rejoice. It won’t be long before the mind-bending horror show from FX returns and again with a vengeance. The fourth season of the anthology styled show, that has taken us to a famous murder house, an asylum, Nerd Bytesand a coven, will pitch it’s tent this time at a carnival in 1950s Jupiter, Florida. American Horror Story: Freakshow will have some of the same cast of characters from previous seasons but will add one new cast member of note. Jyoti Amge is a 20 year-old primordial dwarf, which is a rare form of dwarfism that means the body is extremely small from birth. At just 2ft 0.6in, Amge is one of only of around 100 people in the world to suffer from this particular form of dwarfism. This season of AHS will focus on the struggles of the ‘freaks’ to keep the show alive and to battle public perception. Amge is no stranger to public perception or media attention as she gained some notoriety in India when the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed her record-breaking stature in 2011 on her 18th birthday. The series and Amge debut in October on FX. Two pieces of casting news cam about just as I was reading this to post. Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will be adding a Wonder Woman of sorts in Adrianne Palicki. You might remember this blonde bombshell from Friday Night Lights or Legion. Once in consideration for a role as Princess Diana of Themyscira, she will instead play Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird in the second season’s fifth episode, with the possibility of recurring status if all goes well. Here’s hoping! DC Comics and Warner Bros., not to be outdone, have made a casting addition of their own. They have added Matt Ward (TRON: Legacy) as a New 52 inspired villain called Komodo from The Outsiders. According to producer Marc Guggenheim Ward/Komodo will appear in the second episode of Season 3, but he will be connected to the season-long storyline. A clever way to say, “we’re not telling”. Either way, two nice casting additions for two great shows.

Nerd BytesNightwing: The Series BYTE: Yes, I said it. I’m not sure I even believe it, but this is happening as we speak. Ismahawk Studios’ released a short film last year called Batman: Nightwing. It was incredibly successful on YouTube, garnering 1.6 million views and prompting the creators to try to further develop the project. So, off to Kickstarter they went hoping that the fan popularity of both the original short and the character of Nightwing would prompt people to supports the project. Not surprisingly, they did to the tune of $35,000 allowing them to film, produce and edit a web series this year. Nightwing: The Series starring Danny Shepherd as Dick Grayson is now in post-production stages. Before you start screaming about DC Comics and intellectual property, because this project is a non-profit fan, production it is completely legal. Director Adam Zielinski had this to say of the plot;

“Well, I don’t want to give anything away for our ending but we begin in Bludhaven with Dick already suited and ready for action. It’s a story that’s really fitting to his origin which deals with him stepping out of the shadow of Bruce [Wayne] and coming into his own. There are definitely references to Robin in this.”

The trailer for this project will be launching on 8/20, a Wednesday, of course and don’t forget to check out Batman: Nightwing attached below…

Nerd BytesNERDITORIAL: The world lost a great actor and comedian in Robin Williams. Depression is a scary disorder because the symptoms are so difficulty to recognize. Not because they are unknown or hard to see, but just the opposite. We see and even feel them every day. I did some research on the subject for another article so I won’t bore you with it here. Go read my article Depression is No Laughing Matter. Hearing of Williams’ death reminded me of a great line from The Watchmen;Nerd Bytes

Man goes to Doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain.

Doctor says, “treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him, that should pick you up.”

Man bursts into tears. Says, “But Doctor, I am Pagliacci.”

Depression can affect anyone and as you know if you read my article (or other articles) the only differences between an average persons’ bad day and clinical depression are intensity and duration. Both of which are very hard to gauge unless you see and live with the person every day. Pay attention, offer help, and don’t make life more difficult even for strangers. Remember;
