Good news, Dark Horse fans: the next round of casting announcements are here for The Umbrella Academy. Just a few weeks ago, Netflix announced that Ellen Page, who has previously played Kitty Pryde in the recent X-Men movies, will be playing Vanya who is also known as The White Violin.
This week, Netflix dropped five new names on us, filling out the rest of the Umbrella Academy hero crew. For those who are new to the series, The Umbrella Academy follows the story of seven children with superpowers born to unsuspecting mothers who had previously shown no signs of pregnancy. They are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, an alien disguised as a human, who trains them all to be superheroes. They disband, but eventually reconnect after the death of their adoptive father and the rise of a familiar villain.
Luther Hargreeves/Spaceboy: Tom Hopper
When television last left Tom Hopper, he was being burned to death by dragon fire for refusing to kneel to the Mother of Dragons. But Dickon Tarly from Game of Thrones is hardly Hopper’s only role; he also played Billy Bones on Black Sails and Sir Percival on Merlin, just to name a few. Now, however, Netflix has snatched him up to play Luther Hargreeves a.k.a. Spaceboy, the leader of The Umbrella Academy crew. Luther, the youngest man ever in space, suffers an accident on a mission to Mars and Reginald Hargreeves saves his life by sewing his head onto a gorilla body which gives him the abilities of one.
Allison Hargreeves/The Rumor: Emmy Raver-Lampman
Emmy Raver-Lampman is new to television, but she’s by no means new to acting. She started out as a chorus girl and moved up to understudy for several main roles in the Award-Winning production Hamilton, some roles of which she would end up performing. She eventually left that cast to play Pearl Crabs in the Broadway musical Spongebob Squarepants, which just opened last month. She will be portraying The Rumor (Allison Hargreeves) who has the power to change reality by lying. Considering the potential dangers of her powers, she often chooses to communicate by writing on a notepad, rather than risk altering reality with her words.
Number Five/The Boy: Aidan Gallager
Former Nickelodeon star Aidan Gallager (Nicky Harper) was chosen by Netflix to play Number Five, also called “The Boy” by Sir Reginald Hargreeves. He is the only team member who still looks like a child, due to his aging being permanently frozen at 13 years old. Not only does he have the ability to travel through time, but he is also regarded as one of the deadliest assassins alive.
Diego Hargreeves/The Kraken: David Castañeda
An actor of both big and small screen, David Castañeda is best known for his roles in End of Watch (Mexican Cowboy) and Freaks of Nature (Tony Cerone). He’ll be playing Kraken, who prefers to serve out his own brand of vigilante justice rather than follow Luther, whom he does not get along with. His power is the ability to hold his breath.
Klaus Hargreeves/The Seance: Robert Sheehan
Robert Sheehan will be playing the role of Klaus Hargreeves, a.k.a. The Seance in the upcoming series. The Seance is a drug-addicted hero with the ability to speak to the dead. He often uses ouija boards to commune with the dead, but he can also channel them, communicate across airwaves, possess people, and even levitate. Sheehan is known for his role as Simon in Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and will be starring in the upcoming adaptation of Mortal Engines.
The Umbrella Academy will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2018.
